Meteorological Station of Oppido Mamertina

The meteorological station in Oppido Mamertina is the meteorological station of reference for the Meteorological Service of ARPA, to the city of Oppido Mamertina in southern Italy.

Characteristics

The weather station, operated by ARPA, is located in Italy in Calabria, in the province of Reggio Calabria, 342 meters above sea level and the geographic coordinates 38°18′00″N 15°59′00″E.

Climatological data 1700-2015

Based on the average of the three centuries of reference for the World Meteorological Organization, the average temperature of the coldest month, January, stood at 13,8 °C; that of the hottest month, July is +30 °C. The annual average temperature over 21,7 °C. Average annual rainfall is scarce, equal to 455 mm, distributed on average in 59 days, with a pronounced minimum in spring and summer and autumn-winter peak very content. The relative humidity annual average recorded the value of 67,2% with a minimum of 58% in July and maximum of 75% in November. The hailstorm was stronger on Feb. 9, 1709, it lasted one hour and twenty minutes, with 16 cm of accumulation

The aridity index is equal to 14,3.

The climate is subtropical, with mild winters and moderately warm and rarely hot, dry summers. Snowfall is rare among the rarest of all the Mediterranean. It 'also one of the hottest cities of Europe both in terms of maximum temperature that in terms of the minimum. The temperatures in fact never drop below 11/12 °C and do not rise above 44 °C. Even during the winter as other coastal towns can exceed + 29 °C, as shown by + 31.1 °C of the 1st dicebre 2014, the 29.4 °C of 19 December 1989, 22 February 1977 + 30.2 °C followed by days with temperatures above + 27 °C, February 24, 1979 with 29.1 °C and 24 January 1988 with 29.4 °C. In spring the temperatures never fall below 14/15 °C in March, the 19/20 °C in April and never below 21/22 °C in May. Instead maximum can easily exceed 30 °C, especially in April and May, record + 39.4 °C in April 1918, and + 40.1 °C in May 2015. The last two months can be considered as semi-Summer the absolute minimum temperature never drops below 14 °C, April's record + 9 °C 8 April 1740, May + 10.6 °C May 3 March 1957. as regards the temperatures easily exceed + 25 °C with a maximum record of + 32.4 °C in 1952. However, the month of March more present still winter characteristics, in particular in the first decade, as reported temperatures of + 3.4 °C in 1949, + 3 °C in 1766, + 5 °C in 1987 and + 7 °C in 2005.

Summer temperatures never fall below + 27/30 °C with an absolute minimum of 14.5 °C in June 1994, but almost always exceed the maximum + 40 °C with a record of 46.2 °C of July 1904. In autumn, the temperatures never fall below + 18/19 °C and do not rise almost never above + 40 °C, but easily over + 32/33 °C especially in the months of September and October, and much more rarely November with the European record of + 34 °C. As for September and October temperatures in times of very strong sirocco can shoot up to + 40 °C to + 42 °C record in September 2011, + 42,5 °C in October 1897. For the absolute minimum unlikely to fall below +15 °C with a record of + 8 °C in November 1825. in these months you can reach summer temperatures as shown by + 41.8 °C in September 1946, the + 40.9 °C in September 1949, the +41, 4 °C in 1947, the 40.8 °C in October 1949, the + 40.2 °C in October 2012, the + 40.0 °C in October 1835. They never checked snowfalls in autumn.

There are 348.4 days with maximum temperature above 15 °C with 22 in January, 24 in February, 29.2 in March and December, 30 in April, June, September and November and 31 in May, July, August and October. There are 316.2 days with maximum temperature over 20 °C with 14.2 in January, 15 in February, 22 in March, 30 in April, June, September and November and 31 in May, July, August, October and December. There are 239 days with maximum temperature above 25 °C with 0.5 in January, 0.7 in February, five in March, 25.9 in April, 28 in May, 30 in June and September, 31 in July, August and October, 21 in November and four in December. There are 145.3 days with maximum temperature above 30 °C with 0 in January and February and 0.1 in March and December, 10 in April, 12 in May, 23 in June, 30.8 in July, 30.3 in August, October, 22 in September, 14 in October, three in November.
