Michael James Tomlinson-Mynors[1] (born 1 October 1977) is a Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom. He is the Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency of Mid Dorset and North Poole after gain ing the seat from the Liberal Democrats at the 2015 General Election.[2] Previously, he was a barrister,[3] and in 2014 he fought to secure £5 million extra funding for a local special school.[4]

Charity work

Tomlinson is part of the Conservative Party's Project Umubano, and has worked in Rwanda and Sierra Leone, where he helped advise local judges.[3]

Parliamentary career

Tomlinson has represented the constituency of Mid Dorset and North Poole since the 2015 General Election.[2] He made his maiden speech in the House of Commons on 22 June 2015 during a debate on the Education and Adoption Bill.[5] Tomlinson used his maiden speech to highlight funding disparities between local education authorities, he called for fairer funding in Poole and Dorset[6] He is in favour of Britain leaving the EU.[7]

Tomlinson has used his first year in parliament to advance the austerity agenda. He has consistently voted against higher taxes on banks and in favour of reducing the rate of corporation tax. [8] At the same time, Tomlinson has consistently voted to further reduce the payment of benefits over longer periods to those who are unable to work due to illness or disability. He has voted: to remove the "work-related activity component" from the Employment and Support Allowance; to remove the "limited capability for work" element of Universal Credit; and against making the removal of the work-related activity component from ESA conditional on an impact assessment. [9]

The flavour of Tomlinson's voting record is well captured by a vote on 4 Jun 2015 when on the same day he voted both in favour of proposed spending cuts and changes to the welfare system and in favour of additional spending on new nuclear weapons.[10]

More widely on military matters, Tomlinson has consistently voted for use of UK military forces in combat operations overseas.[11] Tomlinson has consistently voted against providing support to refugees and asylum seekers, including civilian children fleeing countries where the UK has intervened militarily.[12]

In his first year in parliament, Tomlinson has vigorously blocked action to tackle climate change. He recently voted against requiring a strategy for carbon capture and storage for the energy industry and against setting an annual decarbonisation target for the UK.[13] He also voted for the removal of exemption from the CCL for renewable energy, despite the Government’s own impact assessment finding that as a result of this measure the UK will be producing over 1 million more tonnes of CO2 every single year.[14]

Tomlinson has consistently voted for more restrictive regulation of trade union activity.[15]
