The Michigan State Historic Preservation Office is in charge of the listing of historic resources of local, state, and national interest in the U.S. state of Michigan. Properties listed by the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office are known as Michigan State Historic Sites.

Listing criteria

The Michigan State Historic Preservation Office runs similarly to the National Register of Historic Places, and properties eligible for inclusion on the state register follow a similar criteria. Properties include: buildings, lighthouses, bridges, historic sites, roads and trails, historic districts, and many other features and places deemed important in the history of Michigan.

These sites are not necessarily included on the National Register and vice versa. There are currently over 3,500 Michigan State Historic Sites, while Michigan has just over 1,700 listings on the National Register of Historic Places. For example, Woodland Cemetery is recognized on the state level but not nationally; and the North Maumee Bay Archeological District is recognized nationally but not on the state level.

Administration

The Michigan State Historic Preservation Office is administered by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority. The agency was established with the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, which required each state to establish a state historic preservation office to head the collection of historic sites in their state. The Michigan State Historic Preservation Office is located at 702 West Kalamazoo Street in the state capital of Lansing.
