MSI (Micro-Star International Co., Ltd, Chinese: 微星科技股份有限公司) is a Taiwanese multinational information technology corporation headquartered in New Taipei City, Taiwan. It designs, develops and provides computer hardware, related products and services, including laptops, motherboards, graphics cards, All-in-One PCs, servers, industrial computers, PC peripherals, car infotainment products, etc.

The company has a primary listing on the Taiwan Stock Exchange[1] and was established in August 1986 by 5 founders – Hsu Xiang (a.k.a. Joseph Hsu),[2] Huang Jinqing (a.k.a. Jeans Huang),[3][4] Lin Wentong (a.k.a. Frank Lin),[5] Yu Xian'neng (a.k.a. Kenny Yu), and Lu Qilong (a.k.a. Henry Lu). First starting its business in New Taipei City, Taiwan, MSI later expanded into Mainland China, setting up its Baoan Plant in Shenzhen in 2000 and establishing research and development facilities in Kunshan in 2001. It also provides global warranty service in North America, Central/South America, Asia, Australia and Europe.[6]

The company has been a sponsor for a number of eSports teams[7] and is also the host of the international gaming event MSI Masters Gaming Arena (formerly known as MSI Beat IT).[8][9][10][11] The earliest Beat IT tournament can be traced back to 2010, featuring Evil Geniuses winning the championship.[12]

History

1980s

Established in 1986, MSI first focused on the design and manufacturing of motherboards and add-on cards. Later that same year, MSI introduced the first overclockable 286 motherboard.

In 1989, MSI introduced the first 486 motherboard.

1990s

In 1993, MSI introduced the first 586 motherboard.

In 1995, MSI introduced Dual Pentium Pro-based motherboard.

In 1997, MSI inaugurated its Plant I in Jung-He city and introduced the Intel Pentium II-based motherboard with Intel MMX Technology, along with the first graphics card product, and the first barebone product.

In 1998, MSI became a public company as it went on IPO (Initial Public Offering) on the Taipei Stock Exchange (TAIEX) and introduced the first Socket 7 based motherboard.

2000s

In 2000, MSI Computer (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd. was founded. In the same year, MSI inaugurated its Plant III in Jung-He city and introduced the first Set-Top Box product.

In 2001, MSI Electronics (Kunshan) Co., Ltd. was founded.

In 2002, MSI introduced the first PC2PC Bluetooth & WLAN motherboard.

In 2003, MSI introduced the first Pen Tablet PC product (PenNote3100).[13]

In 2004, MSI introduced the first Notebook product (M510C).[14]

In 2008, MSI was ranked among the Top 20 Taiwan Global Brands.[15]

In 2009, MSI introduced its first Ultra Slim Notebook (X320),[16] and first All-in-One PC (AP1900).[17]

2010s

In 2011, MSI was named one of the Top 100 Taiwan Brands, distinguished among 500 brands.[18]

In 2013, MSI has been awarded from Taiwan Excellence for 15 consecutive years.[19]

In 2015, MSI was ranked the 4th best laptop brand of 2015 by Laptop Magazine, USA.[20][21]

In early 2016, MSI announced collaboration with HTC and has revealed Vive-ready systems to offer Virtual Reality experience.[22][23][24][25][26][27]

Operations

MSI's offices in Zhonghe District, New Taipei City, Taiwan serve as the company's headquarters, and house a number of different divisions and services.[28]

Manufacturing initially took place at plants in Taiwan. In 2000 and 2001, MSI announced manufacturing facilities in China’s Shenzhen[29] and Kunshan[30] to meet the growing demands of the global market.

The company has multiple branch offices in the Americas, Europe, Asia, Australia, and South Africa. As of 2015 the company has employed a global workforce of over 13,500 and has a global presence in over 120 countries, spanning the Americas, Europe/Middle East/Africa (EMEA) and Asia Pacific.

Products

The company first built its reputation on developing and manufacturing quality computer motherboards and graphics cards. It established its subsidiary FUNTORO in 2008 to provide comprehensive IT solutions for vehicle infotainment. Now it provides a variety of products ranging from laptops, gaming laptops,[31] motherboards, graphics cards, all-in-one PCs, mobile workstations, barebone computers, servers, IPCs, multimedia peripherals to vehicle infotainment solutions, smart cleaning robots, panoramic Wi-Fi cameras, etc.

MSI GAMING Series

According to information on MSI official website, its GAMING series features laptops, motherboards, graphic cards, All-in-One PCs and gaming peripherals designed for gamers, power users and all. Said to incorporate high-end, durable components that have passed rigorous military class certification tests, the GAMING series has garnered generally favorable reviews and quite a few awards.[32][33][34][35]

MSI aims at providing environmentally friendly products[83] and services to consumers and moving towards the goals of green design, green resources and green technology.[84] Its initiatives to take responsibility for the company's effects on environmental and social wellbeing include Public Welfare Policy,[85] Social Reward,[86] Donation with Love,[87] Education Assistance[88] and MSI Corporate Volunteers.[89]

In 1999, MSI obtained Bureau Veritas Quality International (BVQI) ISO 14001:1996 Environmental Management System certification.

In 2003, it obtained BVQI OHSAS 18000:1999 Occupational Health and Safety Management System certification.

The company later got its QC 080000 IECQ HSPM (Hazardous Substance Process Management) certification in 2006 and initiated ISO 14064-1 GreenHouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Inventories and Verification Statement in 2008.

In March 2009, MSI was named as one of Taiwan's "Top 50 Corporate Citizens 2009" by CommonWealth Magazine (Issue 416) and "Top CSR Excellent Enterprises 2009" by Global Views Magazine (Issue 273) in Taiwan.[90]

In 2010, the company received Taiwan’s Industrial Sustainable Excellence Award 2010[91] and Public Welfare Award for Social Education.[92]

In 2012, MSI received the "Energy Conservation and Carbon Reduction Action Mark" Award from Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) of the Executive Yuan, Taiwan.

In 2013, the company received Premium Award of "Top Green Brand 2013 in the ICT category" from Business Next Magazine and its All-in-One PC obtained ISO 14006 Environmental management systems—Guidelines for incorporating ecodesign certification.

MSI received 2014 New Taipei City Environmental Protection Education Award—Corporate Group Premium Award and was recognized again by Excellence Award of “Top Green Brand 2014 in the ICT category” from Business Next Magazine.[93]

GHG Management

MSI is also committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from its global activities and started undertaking greenhouse gas inventory accounting since 2007.[94] The company initiated ISO 14064-1 GreenHouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Inventories and Verification Statement in 2008 and started to conduct the inventory accounting in accordance with ISO 14064-1 and the GHG Protocol. The inventory boundary covers MSI Taiwan, MSI Shenzhen and MSI Kunshan.
