Mikla is a refined contemporary restaurant in Istanbul, known for its “New Anatolian Kitchen.” Opened in October 2005, Mikla is on the top two floors of The Marmara Pera Hotel located in the historic Pera region, with its outstanding view of Istanbul, including a birdseye view of the historical peninsula, the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus.[1][2][3][4]

Restaurant

Mikla opened in October 2005. The initial idea was to create a refined but contemporary “Istanbullu” Restaurant. Both the menu and the general feel of the restaurant reflect the Turkish-Scandinavian background of Mehmet Gürs, the Chef-Owner who was among the first to pioneer the contemporary restaurant scene in Istanbul when he moved to Istanbul in 1996.[5][6] "With its outstanding food, breathtaking view, proper service and inspiring music, Mikla continues to enjoy raving local and international reviews.[7][8][9][10]

The name of the restaurant is derived from "Miklagard", the Old Norse name for Istanbul, meaning "the Great Town".[3]

Reservations are recommended. Mikla is closed on Sundays.[3]

Food

At the end of an extensive research and dedicated creative process,[11] Mikla launched its ‘New Anatolian Kitchen’ in 2012. In this new approach, traditional and true ‘noble’ products are treated with utmost respect while being transformed with a blend of new and ancient techniques.[12]

Ingredients from Istanbul and throughout Turkey are carefully sourced and selected, “mostly humble”, not necessarily fancy, but they are interpreted with the utmost respect. At the core of each search lies an understanding of the land, its traditions, and its people.[13][14]

Location

Located on the roof top floor of the fashionable “The Marmara Pera” hotel, “Mikla is urban, sleek and stylish. The restaurant is funky retro with chrome 70’s and 50’s furniture and a stunning wooden rail-sleepers bar.”[15] The magical views over the city stretch to the Hagia Sophia and the Topkapi Palace where you almost travel back through time to the heart of the Old Istanbul.

Chef-Owner

Restaurant's owner and chef Mehmet Gürs was born in Finland to a Turkish father and a Finnish-Swedish mother. Grown up in Sweden, completed his hopitality education and proper training in USA and settled in Istanbul in 1996 to open up his first restaurant. Currently he is the chef-owner of the Food and Beverage Group in Turkey, a cookbook author and the guest speaker of many leading international gastronomic events as well as the president of Bocuse d’Or in Turkey. He is married to Asena Gürs and they have a son, Bora.[2][4]
