San Francisco de Milagro (Spanish for Miracle) is a city located in Guayas, Ecuador. It is the seat of Milagro Canton.
Milagro is the second largest city in the province of Guayas. As of the census of 2007, there were 180,103 people residing within the canton limits. Milagro is known for its impressive progress in agriculture, industry and commerce. Sugar cane and pineapples are the most important crop.
History of the name
According to the legend back in 1784 Milagro was a plantation farm owned by a trader named Don Miguel de Salcedo. At that time his land geographically belonged to Yaguachi Canton.
One day Don Miguel's wife fell very sick, he brought several doctors that were unable to help her. One day an indigenous beggar came to knoking at his door and gave him a bunch of leaves telling Don Miguel how to prepare an insussion tea that will cure his wife. Don Miguel, as desperate as he was, gave the medicine to his wife hoping the beverage would heal her and they did. However, Miguel de Salcedo did not believe the plans saved his wife, instead he thought that San Francisco de Asís had saved her. Everybody thought that it was a "miracle" (Milagro), and from that day on this lands are known as San Francisco de Milagro, St. Francis Miracle.
Progress of Milagro
Milagro has been improving its infrastructure and getting better these last years. With the opening of a shopping center (El Paseo Shopping Milagro), cinema theaters, and the regeneration of the downtown, Milagro has now a new face that gives pride to the citizens of this location. The tourism is greater than before. One attractive place that has this city is Jerusalem, located at the bottom of the river Chimbo. But for most of the tourists, its main attraction is the Ingenio Valdez, which is the pride of Milagreños. This city provides hotel infrastructure, homes and nightclubs, social clubs and public and private sport courts, as the club Nacional and Visaltur. Its dishes are grilled meat, dried meat and dry goat, among others.
Azucarera Valdez (previously known as Ingenio Valdez)
Founded in 1884 in Milagro by Rafael Valdez Cervantes. It is the single most powerfull business in Milagro, it employs a vast population of Milagrenos as "jornaleros" or sugar cane choppers. In 1922 it was incorporated in Guayaquil as Compañía Azucarera Valdez S.A by the decendants of Rafael Valdez. In 1992 is acquired by Corporacion Noboa (Nobis Group)
