Ministry of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine
The Ministry of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine is the central government ministry of Sri Lanka responsible for health. The ministry is responsible for formulating and implementing national policy on health, nutrition, indigenous medicine and other subjects which come under its purview.[1] Under the Constitution of Sri Lanka provincial councils are responsible for running public hospitals but some hospitals, known as line ministry hospitals, are the responsibility of the Ministry of Health in Colombo. There were 49 line ministry hospitals in 2011 which included all teaching hospitals in the country.[2] Together they had 33,000 beds (47% all beds in public hospitals).[2] The current Minister of Health, Nutrition Indigenous Medicine and Deputy Minister of Health, Nutrition Indigenous Medicine are Rajitha Senaratne and Cassim Faizal respectively.[3][4] The ministry's secretary is Upali Marasinghe.[5]
