Balach Marri (Urdu: مير بالاچ مری) was the leader of the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist organization fighting for autonomy of Balochistan province from the state of Pakistan.

Education

Marri was one of six sons of the Balochistan politician Khair Bakhsh Marri. Marri's brothers are Hyrbyair Marri, Ghazan Marri, Hamza Marri, Mehran Marri, and Changez Marri. Marri qualified as an electronic engineer from Moscow. As was customary during those times, the KGB actively cultivated relationships with Baloch students in Russia. Marri was one of their success stories.[1]

Creation of BLA

Because of his intimate connections with India and Russia, it was no surprise that Marri was picked as the new head of the revived BLA. The creation of the Balochistan Liberation Army can be attributed to the broader game that was being played in the region in 1980s and which is currently again in progress in the region. The old players are back but on the opposite sides and hence their instruments of coercion and instability are back in business. BLA is one such tool, used by these global powers to further their own interests.

Controversies

Chairman Baluch Youth Council, Mir Hazar Khan Baluch has said "So Called" Baluch Separatist Leaders Balach Marri and his brother Herbyar Marri are involved in the killing of Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti and Justice Muhammad Nawaz Marri, two most prominent Baluch personalities killed in recent years.[2]

Addressing a meeting of the Central Council of Baluch Youth, Chairman Mir Hazar Khan Baluch further uncovered that "A Senior Indian Diplomat had recently facilitated a meeting between Herbyar Marri and Barahamdagh Bugti to remove their misunderstanding over the killing of Nawab Akbar Bugti and counter killing of Balach Marri".Baluch said during the meeting, Barahmdagh Bugti alleged that the person behind taking his Grand Father late Nawab Akbar Bugti to the cave was Balach Marri, brother of Herbyar Marri. He said the cave came down due to a Blast by Remote Control and Balach Marri was standing just outside the cave at the time.[3]
