Miraflores Charterhouse (Spanish: Cartuja de Miraflores) is a charterhouse, or Carthusian monastery, located in the city of Burgos in Spain.[2]
For centuries it was a summer residence of the Spanish monarchy and is one of the most important Gothic buildings of Spain.
Location
It is situated in the east part of the city of Burgos, in the Fuentes Blancas urban park.
History
The buildings were originally built as a palace for Henry III of Castile in 1401, while his son John II of Castile gave it to the Carthusian Order in order to make it a royal burial place, and in 1441 the abbey was founded.[3] In 1452 the palace was damaged by fire and reconstruction started in 1454 under the direction of the architects Juan de Colonia and Simón de Colonia. The restoration was finished in 1484, during the reign of Isabella I of Castile.
Works of art
There are several works by Gil de Siloé:
- The main altarpiece.
- The mausoleum of King John II of Castile and of his wife, Isabella of Portugal.
- The funeral monument of Alfonso, son of John II and brother of Isabella I of Castile.
Other works include a sculpture of Saint Bruno by Manuel Pereira, and an Annunciation by Pedro Berruguete.
Transport
The charterhouse can be accessed on foot and by private car. There is public parking in front of the monastery. The bus line 17 connects the Plaza de España with the charterhouse on all religious holidays and Sunday mornings.[4]
