Mo Mohamed Salih (born 1985) is a Canadian politician, who was elected to London City Council in the London, Ontario municipal election, 2014 to succeed Joe Swan in Ward 3.[1][2][3] Salih is the first person of Sudanese descent to become an elected official outside of Sudan.[4][5]
Background
Mohamed was born in Sudan. He fled Sudan to Canada at the age of 8, with his mother and sister. Mo grew up in Scarborough and only moved to London months leading up to the municipal election. [5]
Politics
In 2013, he ran to become the London West representative for the NDP.[6]
In 2014, he ran for London City Council and was elected.[1][2][3]
In 2014 he was honoured at the Black Canadian Awards for his political and professional work.[7]
His campaigns were notable for their significant emphasis on social media.[5]
He has spoken out against campaign racism.[8]
Salih a charismatic and effective leader in his rookie year was considered as one of the top politicians ranked at top among his colleagues.[9]
Salih known for challenging the status quo and advocating for his constituents. Salih called for end of controversial 'carding' police practice to end. [10]
Salih also is known for challenge the status quo and bureaucracy, making headlines on few occasions for being a strong steward for taxpayers and pushing for accountability. [11]
Mo is an advocate for those in poverty Salih strong voice against predatory loans calling for regulations.[12]
