Mocavo is a privately held Internet company based in Boulder, Colorado, United States.[2] It is a for-profit, genealogy search engine with millions of records and historical documents online;[3] it provides a number of tools such as family trees and advanced search features for genealogical and historical research.[4]

History

Founded by Cliff Shaw, Mocavo launched on March 16, 2011.[5] On June 14, 2011, Family Tree Magazine named Mocavo as one of the best 101 genealogy websites of 2011.[6]

Mocavo participated in the Boulder Techstars program in the Summer of 2011.[7]

In September 2011, Mocavo raised a 1 million dollar round from "David Cohen, Dave McClure, David Bonderman, Walt Winshall, David Calone, Dave Carlson, Troy Henikoff, and other angels".[8] Mocavo introduced Mocavo.co.uk on November 29, 2011[9] and launched its first paid service named Mocavo Plus in December 2011.[10] In May 2012, Mocavo received a $4.1 million Series A round of funding from the Foundry Group.[11]

After gaining additional funding, Ryan Hunter and Michael J. Leclerc joined Mocavo as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Genealogist respectively.[12] In September 2012, Mocavo acquired ReadyMicro, a Utah-based company that specialized in digitization and preservation services.[13]

In November 2012, Mocavo launched a free Yearbook collection[14] and rolled out free scanning services for all Mocavo members.[15] In January 2013 Mocavo joined FHISO as one of the founding members,[16] to help maintain, develop and evolve the GEDCOM standards sought by the genealogy community; it also partnered with FreeBMD to add 300 million English and Welsh records to the Mocavo index.[17] On October 11, 2013, Mocavo announced its Free Forever Movement.[18] In June 2014 it was announced that UK based genealogy provider Findmypast had acquired the company for an undisclosed sum.[19]

Products and services

Mocavo offers a variety of historically significant documents and images, such as records from the Social Security Death Index as well as a free yearbook collection.

Mocavo offers three different subscription tiers: Mocavo Basic, Mocavo Silver, & Mocavo Gold.
