Modern High School for Girls is a private school (nursery, junior and senior school) in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The director is Devi Kar. MHS won the British Council - International School Award for the period 2011 to 2014 as also the CINI and Save the Children Best School Award for "Each One Teach One" campaign.

The school motto is "Satyam Shivam Sundaram".

History

Modern High School for Girls was founded by Mrs. B.M. Birla on January 3, 1952. The school was set up at 28, Camac Street with Mrs. Violet Clarke as the first Principal. In 1953 the senior school moved to a new location 33, Theatre Road (now Shakespeare Sarani), Calcutta (now Kolkata). The junior school remained at the same location.

The foundation stone for the present school building was laid by the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. B.C. Roy on December 9, 1957 and in March 1960; the senior school was transferred to the present building at 78, Syed Amir Ali Avenue.

Examinations

The school is affiliated to the CISCE. Students take ICSE and ISC examinations.

Curriculum

Co-curricular activities include sports, public speaking, quizzing, creative writing, art appreciation (visual and performing), environmental projects and environmental awareness, community service projects, Information Technology, music and dance.

School clubs include:

In 1985, 'Maitree', the inter-school fest organized by classes XI and XII, was held for the first time at the Ice Skating Rink. In March 1987, the foundation stone for the Science Hall with the Planetarium was laid. Computer classes started in the Science Hall from February 1988, after its inauguration. Modern High School celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2002.
