Modesto Marini is an award-winning chef-restaurateur from Italy, born in the town of Lake Garda, 90 minutes from Milan.[2] He is the owner of the The Marini's Group, which includes Marini's on 57, the highest rooftop bar, restaurant and lounge in Malaysia;[3] Marble 8, a steakhouse; and M Marini Caffè, a champagne and caviar bar.
Career
Marini started cooking when he was a teenager[3] and completed professional culinary training[1] before working as a sous chef at Cecconi’s in London's Mayfair,[4] which was patronised by royalty and celebrities. He moved to Singapore when he was 21 to be a sous chef at Da Paolo restaurant. He moved to Malaysia in 1995 and settled there.[3] It was during this time that he opened a successful chain of Italian restaurants called Modesto's. By 2008, the chain had nine outlets, and hosted a Ferrari party in 2000. It also hosted Formula 1 and MotoGP stars like Jarno Trulli, Valentino Rossi and Loris Capirossi, with Trulli launching his wines at the outlet.[1] He later disposed his shares in the chain, which also included restaurants in Singapore[3] and Indonesia.[5]
The Marini's Group
In 2012, he opened Marini's on 57, the highest rooftop bar, restaurant and lounge in Malaysia, located in Kuala Lumpur.[3]
Marini opened another two establishments in 2014: M Marini Caffè, located at Suria KLCC,[6] and Marble 8, a steakhouse in Kuala Lumpur.[7]
Marini's on 57 has hosted a number of celebrities including Tiger Woods, Formula One drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, former English footballer and manager Glenn Hoddle, LPGA stars Paula Creamer and Michelle Wie, Danish tennis player Caroline Wozniacki, American PGA Professional Chris Stroud, season one winner of Masterchef Whitney Miller, designer Jimmy Choo, singer Nicole Scherzinger,[8] and Rick Harrison and Corey Harrison of Pawn Stars.[9] It was also the venue of the after-party of the 2014 Laureus World Sports Awards.[10]
Music
In 2014, Marini engaged British House Music DJ Danny Rampling, who is widely credited as one of the original founders of the UK's rave/club scene, and his wife, Ilona Rampling, to perform at the Formula 1 party of Marini's on 57.[11]
In the same year, Marini collaborated with the father of Balaeric Chill Out Music, DJ José Padilla, to create an album to commemorate the second anniversary of Marini’s on 57 called Sunset Hours Volume One.[12] The album will be launched in Ibiza, Spain, on 20 June 2014.[13]
Awards
Modesto's was the winner of the Superbrands award in 2003.[2] Marini was the recipient of the Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards' Icon of the Year award in 2013.[14] Marini's on 57 received the Signum Virtutis (Seal of Excellence), Seven Stars Global Luxury Awards, which was presented to Marini by Prince della Torre e Tasso in 2014.[15]
