Mokhotlong district (in Sesotho language "the place of the bald ibis") is a district of Lesotho. It includes the highest terrain in the Maloti Range and the source of the Senqu River, Lesotho’s primary watershed. It has an area of 4,075 km2 and a population in 2006 of approximately 96,340.[1] It is one of the poorest and most remote areas of Lesotho. It is mostly rural, however there are also some diamonds. Mokhotlong is the capital or camptown, and only town in the district. It has a population of approximately 7,000 (2004).

Geography

In the east, Mokhotlong borders on the KwaZulu-Natal Province of South Africa, with its north point bordering the Free State Province. Domestically, it borders on the following districts:
