Morchella capitata is a species of fungus in the Morchellaceae family native to North America. Described as new to science in 2012, the species is found in Oregon at elevations of about 1,200 m (3,900 ft) in spruce and fir forests that have experienced some burning the year previous.[1]
Morchella capitata is one of four species of wildfire-adapted morel in western North America, the others being M. septimelata, M. sextelata, and M. tomentosa.[1] M. capitata, identified as phylogenetic species "Mel-9", has also been found in Turkey,[2] Sweden,[2] and China,[3] but it remains unclear whether dispersal between these distant locations occurred naturally or through accidental introduction by humans.[3]
In 2014, Richard et al. clarified the taxonomic status of this species, retaining the name Morchella exuberans of Clowez (2012) over M. capitata.[4][5]
