Morgan (given name)
Morgan is a Celtic given name traditionally used in Wales, Brittany and Scotland. In the UK and Ireland it is traditionally a male name, though also increasingly used for girls too.
In the United States, by contrast, it is more commonly used as a unisex name. It was the 63rd most popular name for girls born in the United States in 2010 and the 518th most popular name for boys born there in 2010. The name is also used for both sexes in other English-speaking countries, including Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.[1] It is also frequently used in Brittany, where it is traditionally a male name.
The male and female names may not be the same name in origin. The male name is a descendant of Old Welsh Morcant, possibly derived from mor (meaning "sea") and cant (meaning "circle"),[1] with the meaning "sea chief" or "sea defender".[2]
