Prof. Dr. Muhammad Rehman (Urdu: پروفيسرڈ اکٹرمحمّدرحمٰن ; born 5 January 1944) is a Pakistani Cardiac surgeon.Dr. Muhammad Rehman hails from village Budhni.He is the founder of Rehman Medical Institute (RMI),[1][2] Rehman Medical College[3] and Rehman Medical Center.
Dr. Rehman obtained his MBBS degree from the Khyber Medical College. He completed his training in Cardiothoracic surgery in 1975 from Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh, UK. He is the leading Cardiothoracic surgeon in Pakistan.[4] His experience in the field of Cardiac Surgery started in July 1974 as Registrar in Cardiothoracic Surgery in The London Chest Hospital. In January 1975 he moved on to work as Registrar in Brompton Hospital, London. He then decided to move back to Pakistan and started working in the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), Karachi as Consultant Cardiac Surgeon in August 1975. He remained the Head of the Cardiac Surgical Department in NICVD and served his department for 28 years, retiring as Professor of Cardiac Surgery in January 2004.
While working in NICVD, Professor Rehman has remained the Dean Faculty of Cardiac Surgery in College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan and also served as the President, Pakistan Society of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons. He was the patron of the "Friends of Cardiac Surgery", a non-profit organization supporting the Cardiac Unit at the Civil Hospital, Karachi. He is also the founder / editor of the Journal of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons.
Professor Rehman has been a pioneer in his field of surgery. He established Cardiac Surgery between 1975 -1980 in all types of diseases, like Coronary Bypass Operation, Complex Congenital Heart Diseases and Valvular Heart Diseases, repair/total correction. He has thus personally performed more than 20,000 (twenty thousand) Open Heart Surgeries so far, which is one of the highest figures in the sub-continent.
He has had vast teaching experience, being Examiner at College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan, Jamshoro University, Hyderabad and Karachi University. He has been Lecturer for Diploma courses at the NICVD and Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, Karachi as well as the Sind Medical College.
He has also actively been involved in training of medical and paramedical staff. Between 1980 – 1990 he personally trained Cardiac Technicians, Nurses, Perfusionists and Doctors to perform Open Heart Surgeries at other heart centres across Pakistan
In 1990, Professor Rehman organized Fellow-ship in Cardiac Surgery from College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan. Before retiring from the NICVD he had trained 21 FCPS Cardiac Surgeons from College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan and 2 M.S. from Karachi University.
In 1991 he established Pakistan Society of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons and has organized 3 International symposia of Cardiovascular Surgery & many more academic events in all major cities of Pakistan.
He has also helped in the setting up of 4 new Cardiac Centres for all the Provinces of Pakistan like, Civil Hospital Karachi, Civil Hospital Quetta, Nishtar Hospital Multan and Ayub Medical Complex Abbottabad.
In view of his services in the field of Cardiac Surgery, the Government of Pakistan awarded him the "Sitara-e-Imtiaz", one of the highest civilian awards in 2002.
