Mukashi Mukashi (Kanji: 昔々 ; Kana: むかしむかし ; Romaji: mukashimukashi) is a Japanese expression typically introducing folk tales. It is a rough translation of "Once upon a time" used in English folk tales.
Japanese folklore is used as an inspiration for anime shows and films. Some popular examples are Yu Watase's "Auashi no Ceres (Ceres: Celestial Legend, 2000)", which is based on the legend of the "hagoromo". "Princess Minky Momo (Magical Girl Gigi)", is a gender-bend story based on Momotaro the Peach Boy. "The Peacock King" is based on a mystical Buddhist deity.[1]
