Multifaith Housing Initiative

Multifaith Housing Initiative (MHI) is a charitable organization based in Ottawa, Canada. MHI's mission is providing safe and affordable rental housing to people who are homeless or at risk for homelessness.

Organization

MHI is a grassroots organization with a staff of 1 full-time person and one part-time person. It fulfills its broad mandate with the assistance of over seventy volunteers who serve on various committees,[1] including an annual fundraising "Tulipathon" walkathon event.[2]

The organization received the CMHC Housing Award in 2008,[3] It has received financial support from the Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program.[4] and a grant from the Ontario government.[5]

Housing

Currently MHI owns and operates 41 rental units at 3 locations: 26 units at Blake House, 10 units at Somerset Gardens, and 5 units at Kent House.

Roughly 60% of its units are rented through the city rent supplement program as rent geared to income. The other 40% are rented to people in the private market who have core housing need. These units are subsidized to well below market rent.

In 2012, the organization experienced financial difficulties as a result of rising condo fees at the Somerset Gardens.[6]
