Muscle Beach Tom is the 101st one-reel animated Tom and Jerry short, released on September 7, 1956 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It was directed and produced by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera and animated by Lewis Marshall, Kenneth Muse, Ed Barge and Irven Spence (erroneously credited as Irvin Spence), with backgrounds by Robert Gentle, layouts by Richard Bickenbach and music by Scott Bradley.[1]

Plot

It is a busy day at Muscle Beach and several cats are working out with weights. Jerry is sunbathing, but when Tom and his girlfriend arrive on a date, Tom carelessly dumps their beach equipment on top of Jerry. Jerry moves further down the beach, but Tom rips Jerry's beach towel by sticking his beach umbrella through it. Tom then throws garbage onto Jerry when he lies back down, causing a fed up Jerry to march up to Tom. Jerry slaps Tom with a banana peel and is rewarded when Tom shoves a helium balloon into Jerry's mouth to blow Jerry up into a balloon. Tom then lets go, causing Jerry to whoosh and rocket off into the distance.

Tom turns back, but sees his girlfriend paying attention to Butch weightlifting. Tom flicks Butch's elastic string into his face, but Butch puts the string on an anchor and around Tom's neck, launching Tom into an umbrella and a pole. Jerry then returns and sticks the string onto the pole, stopping Tom from confronting Butch again. Tom crashes back into the pole, which splits and crushes Tom, making Tom a crab.

Butch impresses Tom's girlfriend with more weightlifting, but Tom, determined to win his girl back, impresses his girlfriend with weightlifting displays of his own, starting games of one-upmanship between Butch and Tom over the heart of the girl cat. Both cats take turns lifting progressively heavier weights. After another successful lift each, Butch is unable to lift a heavy barbell. Tom then barely lifts it, but struggles and falls sideways, ending up flattened between the weights.

Butch and the girl cat then dance to radio music, with Butch bouncing Tom's beach ball, while Jerry dances with a banana peel. Tom dances with his girlfriend by digging a sand pit and pulling Butch into it, but Butch pulls Tom into the sand. Tom then clips a crab to Butch's shorts to send Butch flying upwards, but Butch lands in front of an unaware Tom, dancing with Tom before throwing Tom into a trash bin.

In a last-ditch effort, Tom stuffs helium balloons into his bathing suit to look heavily muscled. After the balloons make Tom float over the ground, Tom ties an anchor around his waist to keep from floating away. Tom returns to Butch at his beach equipment showing his love for his girlfriend and punches him, but when Butch strikes Tom, the balloons make Tom flip upside down. After Butch strikes Tom again, Tom knocks Butch out with a swing of the anchor, winning his girlfriend back.

Tom flexes his "muscles" to his girl, but Jerry is eating noisily nearby on his picnic basket, annoying Tom. Tom flips the basket's lid onto Jerry's head to silence Jerry, so Jerry then unties the anchor from around Tom's waist. Tom, kissing his girlfriend, holds onto his beach umbrella to keep from floating away, but Jerry then inflates Tom's suit into a balloon with a helium canister, forcing Tom to grasp his umbrella with both hands, and pricks Tom's suit with a safety pin, causing Tom to spin around into the air and float away into the distance.

Jerry then aims to lift a barbell of two tomatoes to impress Tom's girlfriend, but the weight is too much for him, and like Tom earlier in his successful but short-lived attempt to impress his girlfriend, Jerry falls sideways and ends up flattened between the "weights".
