Museum de Fundatie (Dutch pronunciation: [myˈzeːjɵm də fɵnˈdaːtsi]; English: Museum The Foundation) is an art museum on two locations in the province of Overijssel in the Netherlands, one in the city of Zwolle and the other near the villages of Heino and Wijhe. In the collection of over 7,000 objects are works of Chagall, Mondrian, and Van Gogh. In 2014, the museum had 261,500 visitors.

Locations

Museum de Fundatie has two locations in the province of Overijssel in the east of the Netherlands. The first location is Kasteel Het Nijenhuis, a 17th-century castle near the villages of Heino and Wijhe, which was the residence of museum founder Dirk Hannema. The castle also has sculpture garden.[3] From 1991 until 2005, the second location was the Bergkerk, a former church in the city of Deventer. It was used for temporary exhibitions.[7] Since 2005, the second location is Paleis aan de Blijmarkt, a former court building in the city of Zwolle.[2][8] The location in Zwolle was closed for renovation on 8 January 2012 and reopened on 31 May 2013.[9][10]

Collection

The museum collection is originally based on the eclectic art collection of Dirk Hannema, former museum director of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam. Since 1993, the collection of the Province of Overijssel is also managed by the museum.[4]

The collection contains over 7,000 paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, and other objects.[4] Among these works are paintings of Marc Chagall, Piet Mondrian, Isaac Israëls, Vincent van Gogh, Lucebert, Paul Citroen, Karel Appel, and Carel Willink, and sculptures by Antonio Canova and Gian Lorenzo Bernini.[11]

In 2010, the Van Gogh painting The blute-fin mill (1886) was authenticated by the Van Gogh Museum.[12][13]
