Subedar Nadikerianda Nanjappa Bheemaiah was a war hero of India.
Early Life
Nadikerianda Nanjappa Bheemaiah was born on 1 July 1920. He served in the Army Service Corps and his Army Personnel number was IO-16022.[1]
Incident
In Kashmir, on 21 November 1947, at 0730 hrs, a column of 25 vehicles conveying the rear details of 161 Brigade was attacked in surprise by the enemy at the Uri-Poonch Road. Subedar Nadikerianda Nanjappa Bheemaiah was in charge of nine vehicles of the column. A platoon of infantry immediately ascended the hill on the left side of the road as the enemy was trying to occupy the top of it in order to attack the vehicles from above. The remaining troops of the infantry also followed the example after a short while leaving Subedar Bheemaiah and the men under his command on the road. This V.C.O., using his initiative and presence of mind, managed to move his men safely to the rear of the column although the road was continuously under enemy fire. To ensure that the troops should not be short of ammunition, he went to the vehicles, regardless of the murderous fire he was exposed to, unloaded the ammunition and dispatched it to the infantry at the top of the hill through small squads of his men. He then collected all the wounded men left on the road, rendered first aid to them and proceeded with them up the hill where he organised his men into positions. In the course of the battle that followed, he killed five of the enemy and wounded a large number. Inspired by Bheemaiah's actions, his men accounted for many casualties on the enemy during the battle that raged until 1800 hrs of the day. When the battle was over, this V.C.O. collected all his men and marched them safely to Uri. [2]
Honour
Nanjappa was awarded the Vir Chakra on 21 November 1947 according to the Gazette notification 2 Pres 50, 26-1-50.[3][4]
