NCAA independent schools (lacrosse)
NCAA independent lacrosse schools are four-year institutions in the United States that do not belong to a lacrosse-only conference or a primary all sports conference that sponsors lacrosse. As of the 2015–16 academic year there are 18 men's and 12 women's lacrosse programs in Division I, Division II, and Division III that compete as independents.[1][2]
Division I
Men's
There were two independent teams in the 2015 season, but one of them, Air Force, has become a single-sport member of the Southern Conference (SoCon). The only other independent, NJIT, remains so in 2016. In July 2015, NJIT joined the Atlantic Sun Conference (A-Sun), which has a lacrosse alliance with the SoCon under whose terms the two leagues divide lacrosse sponsorship, with men's in the SoCon and women's in the A-Sun. Despite this alliance, NJIT did not immediately join SoCon men's lacrosse.
Hampton has added men's lacrosse for the 2016 season.
Current
Future
One school has announced that it will add men's lacrosse in the near future, and will initially play as an independent.
Women's
- ↑ The 2016 season will be the last for Delaware State as an independent. Following that season, the team will become a single-sport member of the Atlantic Sun Conference.[4]
- ↑ The 2016 season will be the last for Johns Hopkins as an independent. Following that season, Hopkins will move its women's lacrosse team to the Big Ten Conference; the Hopkins men's lacrosse team has been a Big Ten member since the 2015 season.[5]
