NCT, an initialism of Neo Culture Technology, is a South Korean boy group formed by S.M. Entertainment.[1][2] The group debuted in 2016 with their first sub-unit, NCT U,[3] composed of six members: Taeil, Taeyong, Doyoung, Ten, Jaehyun and Mark.[4]

History

Background

The band was the first boy band group launched by S.M. Entertainment since EXO in 2011.[2][5] It was the first in the company's history to not have a fixed number of members, being made up of multiple subunit groups based in various cities worldwide, with music specialized for those regions, with the first in 2016 in Seoul and the second scheduled for Tokyo, and the rest expected to debut in China.[2][6]

NCT U

Pre-debut

The selection of the first sub-group, domestically based, was said to be similar to other groups debuted by the agency, in terms of looks and skills, but with an emphasis on rap skills, portrayed by members Taeyong and Mark.[5]

The NCT U members were all formerly part of the pre-debut group SMRookies; Taeyong, Ten, Jaehyun, and Mark were introduced in 2013, while Taeil and Doyoung were introduced in 2015; and Chinese members, Winwin and Kun, who performed first with them, were also SMRookies.[7]

In January 2016, Lee Soo-man gave a presentation titled "SMTOWN: New Culture Technology, 2016" at the SM Coex Artium, speaking about S.M. Entertainment's plans for a new boy group in line with their 'culture contents' strategy that would be debuting different teams based in different countries around the world.[6] [8] Later that month, S.M. Entertainment released three teaser clips for the project: "1. The Origin"; "2. Synchronization of your dreams", featuring Taeyong, Hansol, Ten, Mark, and Jaehyun dancing to an earlier version of NCT U's debut single; and "3. 7th Sense", featuring SMRookies member Winwin.[9][10]

Musical releases and activities

On April 4, 2016, S.M. Entertainment revealed two teaser pictures for members Jaehyun and Mark, and announced that they would be debuting NCT U, the first unit of NCT, with two digital singles.[11] The first single, "The 7th Sense", was released on April 6 and the second single, "Without You" was released on April 9 in two versions (with the Korean version recorded by Taeil, Doyoung, and Jaehyun, and the Chinese version featuring SMRookies member Kun.)[4]

On April 9, 2016, they made their first broadcast debut, with a show called On Air NCT Show-Day 1 NCT Life, on South Korea's Naver V-app, with company colleague Super Junior's Kim Heechul as the MC.[12][13] Also on April 9, 2016 they debuted their first live performance in China at "The 16th Music Feng Yun Bang Awards" which also included Chinese members, Kun and Winwin.[14][15] The group made their official debut stage in Korea at KBS Music Bank on April 15.[16][17] On April 19, they performed their two songs on SBS MTV's The Show competing against seasoned groups like CNBLUE and VIXX, among others.[18]
