NUS Business School is the business school of the National University of Singapore (NUS). NUS Business School is consistently rated as one of the top business schools in the Asia Pacific region and one of the leading business schools worldwide. Forbes ranks the schools flagship full-time MBA programme No.7 in the world [1] and the QS World University Rankings ranks the programme No.2 in Asia Pacific.[2]
History
NUS Business School was established in 2002, although its history dates back to 1961, when Business Administration was first taught as a subject in the then Department of Economics in NUS.[3] The school is located at the flagship Mochtar Riady Building at the NUS Kent Ridge campus. The current dean is Professor Bernard Yeung. Given below is a timeline of the schools history
- 1961: The area of Business Administration as a proper academic field is first taught in the Department of Economics at the then University of Singapore.
- 1965: The Department of Business Administration is set up to meet the growing needs of a formal business education in Singapore, under the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, led by Acting Head Professor A H Zecha.
- 1966: First cohort of 24 students enrol. The University of Singapore Business Administration Society is set up.
- 1969: The Department of Business Administration is merged with the Department of Accountancy, and the School of Accountancy and Business Administration is formed.
- 1972: First batch of 26 students graduate in the Diploma of Business Administration programme.
- 1978: Joint-campus scheme between the Nanyang University and the University of Singapore is implemented.
- 1980: The University of Singapore and Nanyang University merge. With the merger of the two universities, the School becomes known as the Faculty of Accountancy and Business Administration. The Faculty comprises the Department of Accountancy as well as the Department of Business Administration. Part-time MBA programme is launched.
- 1983: The Faculty is restructured again, and the School of Accountancy and the School of Management are formed. Stanford-NUS executive programmes in Asia is launched. The MBA Club is formed.
- 1987: The School of Accountancy is moved to the then Nanyang Technological Institute. Following this move, the Faculty's name is shortened to become the Faculty of Business Administration.
- 2002: Faculty of Business Administration is renamed NUS Business School (as it is called today).
- 2003: NUS Business School is accredited by AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) International.
- 2008: NUS Business School becomes the First Asian School to be a full member of The Global Alliance in Management Education (CEMS).
- 2009: NUS Business School receives the renowned European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS) accreditation.
- 2011: NUS Business School's MBA Programme is ranked 4th by Forbes amongst its annual ranking of International MBA Programmes.[4]
Academia and Research
Academic Departments
The school is made up of six academic departments:
Department of Accounting
It was established in 2007 as a distinct department in the NUS Business school. The Department aspires to be a top accounting research department in Asia and globally. It leverages on the Asia geographical advantage to do cutting edge accounting research which not only has international relevance but is distinctive for Asia. Department of Decision Sciences
A multidisciplinary department focusing on Analytics, Operations Research (OR) and Supply Chain Management (SCM), it aims to bridge academic research and industry challenges in the field of Operations Management, OR and SCM. Head of Department: Professor Chung Piaw Teo[6]
Department of Finance
Offers modules that lead to a specialisation in Finance in academic programmes as the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) for undergraduate students, Masters in Business Administration (MBA) and PhD for graduate students. Head of Department: Prof Allaudeen Hameed[7]
Department of Management & Organisation
With a staff strength of around 30, the department offers a variety of courses in organisational behaviour and management, and human resource management through undergraduate, graduate and executive training programs. Department of Marketing
The department's guiding focus is to continue to establish itself as a knowledge-creation and dissemination centre, to influence both the academic and business communities. In this respect, the faculty regularly publishes in premiere scholarly journals such as Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, Management Science, and Marketing Science. An equally important core activity the Department does is in the areas of consultancy and executive training. Armed with diverse knowledge and skill set, it actively seeks collaboration with the industry stakeholder as part of a broader intellectual undertaking. Areas of critical inquiry for the purpose of improving organisational practice and performance include for instance, brand valuation, marketing performance metrics, as well as market and consumer analytics. Department of Strategy & Policy
The Department of Strategy and Policy lends strategic, economic and legal perspectives to business issues in its teaching and research, while demonstrating their relevance to Asia. There are several clusters in which the department engages research including [10]

Programmes
The NUS Business School offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses where students work closely with a range of industries on live projects, as well as take part in programmes outside the classroom.
NUS MBA (Master of Business Administration)
The NUS MBA offers deep Asian insights and expertise while giving participants a global perspective, proving the students with the skills needed in an increasingly competitive workplace. In addition to the academic rigour which ensures that students learn key concepts and analytical tools, the programme also gives opportunities for students to develop their communication, leadership, interpersonal and networking skills. Students are also encouraged to learn about business practices in various countries through exchange programmes and/ or study trips; participate in case competitions and assume leadership positions in managing student clubs.
With students from over 30 nationalities, a diverse faculty team with in-depth industry experience and industry experts visiting the school, NUS MBA students can expect an intellectual, stimulating and insightful experience. The NUS MBA offers a distinctive industry-focused curriculum that combines the best of global business training with a unique focus on the vibrant Asian region. The programme is offered on both full-time and part-time basis:
NUS Full-Time MBA (Master of Business Administration)
Full-time MBA students complete their studies within 17 months. This schedule offers students with the opportunity to enrich their learning experience by spending a semester on student exchange and another semester on internship.
NUS Part-Time MBA (Master of Business Administration)
The part-time NUS MBA programme allows working managers and professionals to upgrade their managerial skills and pursue further professional growth opportunities. Classes for part-time MBA students are held during weekday evenings and/or weekends.[11]

Finance
The NUS MBA Specialisation in Finance focuses on the concerns of the financial industry in the recent years, covering topics like international financial management, private equity, mergers and acquisitions, options and futures and corporate governance.
Marketing
The NUS MBA Specialisation in Marketing focuses on understanding the market, the consumers, the marketing models and approaching different situations with winning marketing strategies for organisations. This specialisation prepares students for a career in strategic marketing, brand consultancy, product management, international marketing, advertising, direct marketing, consumer relations and sales, among others.
Strategy and Organisation
The NUS MBA Specialisation in Strategy and Organisation focuses on the behavioural and strategic issues facing contemporary organisations today. The programme aims to cultivate a spirit of innovation and streamline business processes, especially in the areas of strategic management and planning, operations optimisation and human resource management.
Healthcare Management
The NUS MBA Specialisation in Healthcare Management, offered in partnership with NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, aims at integrating global healthcare best practices within the Asian framework, to transform the management of the healthcare services.
Real Estate
The NUS MBA Specialisation in Real Estate, offered in partnership with the Department of Real Estate at NUS, is a unique programme designed to meet the specialised needs of real estate practitioners. This programme is distinctive in applying the best real estate and business practices in a unique Asian context.
MBA Double Degree Programmes
MBA Double Degrees give the chance to double the prospects for success by studying in one or more renowned universities in more than one location. There are six double degrees to choose from:
NUS-Peking University Double Degree MBA
With the recognition of China being a global superpower, there is a growing importance of an MBA education in Asia, with particular understanding on doing business in China.
NUS-HEC PARIS Double Degree MBA
The National University of Singapore (NUS) and HEC Paris are renowned institutions with over 200 years of heritage combined. When it comes to learning about business in Europe and Asia, both schools provide high quality infrastructure and the ideal learning environments with rich academic traditions, strong reputations and extensive links with the business and public sectors.
S3 Asia MBA
As the only MBA programme that spans across 3 dynamic Asian cities, S3 Asia MBA students are able to leverage on the strengths of three world-class universities. They gain deep insights and develop a good understanding of Asian economies.
Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy
Combining the strengths of both NUS Business School and the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, this new double degree programme - the first of its kind in the region - aims to attract the region's outstanding executives; particularly those who intend to pursue careers in government and its enterprises.
NUS MBA – Yale Master of Advanced Management Double Degree Programme
Launched as a tie-up between NUS and Yale University’s School of Management, the Master of Advanced Management (MAM) is designed to bring a group of extraordinary international students to Yale to further their educational and professional development.
NUS PHD-MBA
The NUS PhD-MBA aims to attract and train talented science and engineering professionals who have the potential to create and lead technology companies. The programme is jointly hosted by the NUS Graduate School for Integrative Sciences and Engineering (NGS) and NUS Business School.
NUS BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration)
The programme operates on a modular system. Students have the flexibility to design their curricula and to pace their studies. They also have the freedom to take modules of their interest, subject to any prerequisite requirements and to modules availability. Business students may freely choose and change their specialisations online at the beginning of every semester (including their very first semester). Indication of specialisation usually takes place at the end of the 2nd year to the start of the 3rd year. It is theoretically possible to complete a BBA in 2 years, and a BBA(Honours) in 3 years.
More than 70% of curricular time is spent in a class with less than 50 other students; more than half of classes conducted have no final examinations. The NUS BBA's U.S.-style curricular structure and assessment rubric are complemented by U.K.-style focus on specialised contents with functional depths, as well as Singapore-style academic governance and educational zeal.[12]
NUS APAC EMBA (Executive MBA)
Designed for executives with at least 10 years of work experience, this programme offers a robust curriculum and an immersive learning experience by bringing participants to 6 different Asian countries – Singapore, Indonesia, India, Japan, China & Australia. In each of the country, there are corporate visits to organisations and sessions with guest speakers to complete the overseas experience.
Established in 1997, the programme boasts a distinguished and professionally diverse alumni network of over 1000 senior executives from the Americas to Australasia, imparting peer-to-peer learning and networking opportunities across the globe.
The programme has a distinguished international faculty, with individuals who earned their PhDs from University of Pennsylvania, Carnegie Mellon University, Harvard University, Stanford Graduate School of Business, London Business School, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, to name a few.
UCLA-NUS EMBA (Executive MBA)
Developed jointly by UCLA Anderson School of Management and NUS Business School, the UCLA - NUS EMBA aims to provide a truly global perspective on leadership and management. The part-time intensive program aims to prepare its participants for C-level management in organizations around the world. Participants will leave with an MBA from both the NUS Business School and UCLA Anderson School of Management – two of the world's most respected business education institutions.[13]
The EMBA partnership between NUS and UCLA aims to capitalize on the immense resources of two Pacific Rim powerhouse business schools in order to meet the future needs of organizational management and embark upon a challenging and intellectually stimulating voyage. As a direct result of this approach, the UCLA - NUS EMBA consistently ranks as one of the top EMBA programs globally.[14]

Twice yearly, the NUS Business School sends its BBA and MBA students around the world on exchange with its 120+ partner universities and schools offering more than 400 places for the BBAs and the MBAs. Students typically spend one semester abroad taking modules worth up to 24 Modular Credits (6 modules) in their 2nd or 3rd year. During this time, the school hosts about 200 exchange students.[16]
