NY State of Health is the health insurance marketplace, previously known as health insurance exchange, in the U.S. state of New York, created in accordance with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The marketplace operates a web site.
The marketplace is offered to individuals and families who are not covered by their employer. It allows enrollees to compare health insurance plans and provides those who qualify with access to tax credits. Enrollment started on October 1, 2013.
Supervisors at the call center report that they are not permitted to divulge the name of the for-profit corporation that owns and runs the call center. The corporate name is not mentioned anywhere on the New York State of Health web site. Supervisors state that they are unable to escalate calls to management when issues arise that calling center personnel cannot resolve. Representatives and supervisors are normally courteous, the information they provide often turns out to be incorrect, misleading, incomplete, and at odds with that provided by others at the center.
At least some of these difficulties may be attributed to the low wages and salaries paid to call center employees. Phone representatives at the Albany, NY center, serving New York State, are paid an hourly wage of approximately $12.40. Their supervisors earn an annual salary of $39,004.
The corporation that owns and operates the marketplace exchange call center for New York and numerous other states is Maximus, Inc. Headquartered in Reston, VA, their phone number is 703 251 8500. The CEO of Maximus is Mr. Richard Montoni. The phone number for his executive assistant is 703 251 8641. When contacting the corporate office it is best to be courteous at all times.
During the first month of operation 16,404 enrolled in health plans offered through New York’s health insurance marketplace.[1]
