Najia Ashar

Najia Ashar [ Urdu:ناجیہ اشعر ] (born 14 July) is a broadcast journalist in Pakistan. She has been a senior anchor and producer for news channel 'Geo News' for 10 years. In 2014, she was awarded the John S. Knight Journalism Fellowship 2014-15 at Stanford.

Personal life

In 2006, she married Ashar Ali, who also worked for Geo. ARY currently works with Abbtak News as a senior news producer. Najia has two children (daughter Aliha, and son Aahil).

Career

Najia joined Geo News in January 2004, initially worked in Dubai and anchoring daily mainstream news bulletins in Karachi. She produced and hosted the daily news programme Yeh Hai Pakistan in 2007, highlighting stories and events from the four provinces of Pakistan, and Nazim Hazir Ho, a programme of interviews with city, district and town administrators from different areas of the country. Besides news bulletins and programs she produced live shows with guests from all walks of life. She also writes for the daily Jang.

Before joining Geo News, Ashar worked for Pakistan Television Network as an anchor/host from 2003 to 2004, hosting Night Time Transmission, conducting the daily programme The Parliamentary Note Book and also hosting the weekly Cultural Round-up for PTV World.

As a journalist, she reported and covered various historical events, including the 2005 Pakistan earthquake, the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto 2007, the 2008 US presidential election, Pakistani general election, 2008, the Mumbai attacks 2008, Pakistan floods 2010, Abbottabad Operation 2011, attack on Malala Yousafzai 2012, Pakistan general election 2013 and the death of TTP Head Hakim Ullah Mehsud.

For her work in the media industry, she has received a number of journalism honors from universities, media organizations, and journalist associations of Pakistan.

Education

Ashar received her master's degree from the Department of International Relations at the University of Karachi and obtained her BA (Hons.) degree in International Relations/ Mass Communication and Sociology from Karachi University. She is a fellow at The East-West Center, US (PAK US Journalist’s Exchange Program 2013, John S. Knight Journalism Fellow 2014-15 and Yahoo International Fellow 2015.
