Nálumávàdi (நாலுமாவடி) pronunciation is a settlement on the southern edge of the Indian peninsula at about 9ºN latitude and 78ºE longitude, in Thoothukudi District. It has a population of approximately 5,486 spanning around 1378 households.[1] There is an abundance of mango groves in the village amongst four large Mangifera indica trees. Thus it has been named Nálumávàdi. In local language it is called Tamil, which means ‘under the shadow of four mango trees.’[2]
Religion
Though Hindu people are the majority, this village has exclusive streets for Christians and Muslims inside the village. There are many Hindu temples, a couple of churches and a mosque, thus servicing the needs of any religion. The people are tolerant and have been living in harmony for many years, putting aside their religious differences. The "Jesus Redeems", a well known church, caters to people from all over the world. Every Saturday is reserved for various speakers talking about Christianity.[3] Ramadhan is celebrated equally well in the Muslim street, where Hindu/Christian friends are usually invited for a big feast on the fast breaking day.
A Church of South India congregation was established in 1841 by Reverend John Thomas and St John's church was built in 1842, extended in 1850 and rebuilt in 1926. The pastorate is part of the Tirunelveli diocese.
Mohan C. Lazarus is a famous Christian evangelist to come out of this village.
