Naomi Anne Folkard (born 18 September 1983) is an archer from Leamington Spa, England. She graduated from Birmingham University in music in 2005.[1]
2004 Summer Olympics
Folkard represented Great Britain at the 2004 Summer Olympics. She placed 17th in the women's individual ranking round with a 72-arrow score of 638. In the first round of elimination, she faced 48th-ranked Olga Pilipova of Kazakhstan. Folkard defeated Pilipova 139–128 in the 18-arrow match to advance to the round of 32. In that round, she faced 49th-ranked Finnish archer Mari Piuva. Folkard won the match 156–151 in the regulation 18 arrows, advancing to the round of 16. She then lost to 1st-ranked and eventual gold medalist Park Sung Hyun of Korea 171–159, finishing 11th in women's individual archery. Folkard was also a member of the 12th-place British women's archery team.
2008 Summer Olympics
At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing Folkard finished her ranking round with a total of 651 points. This gave her the 8th seed for the final competition bracket in which she faced Soha Abed Elaal in the first round, beating the archer from Egypt with 107–95. In the second round she overtook team mate Charlotte Burgess with a score of 110–96, but in the third round she was eliminated by Nami Hayakawa from Japan, 106–97[2]
Together with Alison Williamson and Charlotte Burgess she also took part in the team event. With her 651 score from the ranking round combined with another 651 of Williamson and the 623 of Burgess the British team was in second position after the ranking round, which gave them a straight seed into the quarter finals. With 201–196 they were too strong for the Japanese team. In the semi final against China they scored 202 points with the Chinese scoring 208, missing out on the final. They were unable to recover in the bronze medal match and lost against France 203–201 to miss out on the medals.[3]
2012 Summer Olympics
Naomi ranked 42nd with 637 and team mates Amy Oliver 57th 608 and Alison Williamson 47th 629, the team was ranked 11th. The team lost to Russia in the first round 208–215. Naomi won her first round against Russian Kristina Timofeeva, then lost to eventual bronze medallist Mexican Mariana Avitia.
Current career
Naomi is now coaching part-time. She qualified with a county coach status in January 2012. She also studies Mathematics and is Learning at the Open University. She also tutors local school students in maths.
