The National Institute of Construction Management and Research (acronym NICMAR)[1] is a non profit management institute and research centre in the field of construction engineering and management. The Institute has been recognized by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) and is headquartered at Walchand Centre, Tardeo, Mumbai, India.

Profile

The National Institute of Construction Management and Research was founded in 1983[2] as a result of a joint effort by a group of major construction companies in India headed by Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) whose Chairman, Ajit Gulachand, put forth the idea of setting up an advanced research centre in construction management. HCC contributed 30,000,000 towards the setting up of the proposed institute. The result was the establishment of the institute with headquarters at Walchand Centre, Tardeo in Mumbai and main campus at Pune.

The Institute is a non profit making organization and has a mandate to provides a platform for advanced research and training on the subject and for dissemination of knowledge through print and audiovisual media, conferences and seminars. It also undertakes projects on behalf of other organizations. It is controlled by a Board of Directors and managed by Research Advisory Board and an Academic Advisory Council in matters related to research and academics respectively.Under the Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950, NICMAR was registered as a Public Trust in 1982. The NICMAR Society was constituted in 1984 and registered under the Societies’ Registration Act, 1860.

In 1990, NICMAR was accredited by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Ministry of Science and Technology as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO). Advanced Construction Management Program, a higher studies program conducted by NICMAR in association with Massachusetts Institute of Technology, International Labour Organization and Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad is considered to be a premium education program by the industry.[2] The program is funded by UNDP and has visiting faculty from MIT, University of Michigan, University of Loughborough, and IIMA as per agreements with the respective organizations.[3]

Facilities

NICMAR maintains a library at its main campus in Pune which stocks more than 17000 printed materials by way of reference books, bound volumes, journals and other international publications and reference materials in digital media. It also keeps references on national and international standards such as Bureau of Indian Standards, Indian Roads Congress, International Federation of Consulting Engineers, Geneva, (FIDIC) and International Labour Organization, Geneva.

The collections include 17304 books and theses, 2119 bound volumes of journals and 1092 e-references in the form of compact discs. It also subscribes to 79 periodicals and 9 newspapers such as Proquest ABI Inform, ebrary-Business and Economics, ASCE Journals, ASCE Proceedings, SCIENCEDIRECT – Business, Management and Accounting, Sage Journals, CMIE Prowess, CMIE Industry Outlook, CMIE Economic Outlook and CMIE Capex.

The other infrastructural facilities include Classrooms, Computer Labs, Conference Halls, Auditorium, Open Air Theatre, Student's Hostel, Executive Hostel, Dining Facility, Indoor and Outdoor Sports and Internet Facility.

Associations and collaborations

NICMAR has entered into collaborative associations with several organizations of national and international repute working in the fields of construction, real estate, projects and infrastructure.

Courses

NICMAR’s raison d’etre is to relentlessly strive to create the professionally educated engineering, managerial and leadership talent, in a sector that is rather starved of such high level talent.[13]

NICMAR offers several post graduate level courses in the field of project engineering and construction management and related areas. It also conducts short, medium and long term programs for executive development, primarily aimed at construction industry.[14][15] The longer duration programs are based at Pune, Goa, Indore and Hyderabad campuses.

PG Program in Advanced Construction Management (PGP ACM)

This is a post graduate full-time residential program on concepts and methodologies of management, engineering, architecture, law, information technology and social/behavioral sciences. Pune, Hyderabad, Goa and Indore campuses offer the course.[16]

PG in Project Engineering and Management (PGP PEM)

The program is an advanced course on the theory and practices of Project Engineering and Management, a two year full-time residential one, available at Pune campus. It is aimed at preparing the students in all aspects of the subject including finance, marketing, human resource, quality, planning, software and IT systems.[17]

PG in Real Estate And Urban Infrastructure Management (PGP REUIM)

This is a residential program with a two year duration, offered at Pune campus and covers topics such as Investment and Markets, and Construction and Development. It aims at the development of techno-managers proficient in valuation, project management, applied economics, urban planning and asset management.[18]

PG Diploma in Infrastructure Finance, Development & Management (PGP IFDM)

[19] Two-year, full-time, residential Programme for degree holders, offered from Pune.


NICMAR offers a two year PGP-IFDM intensive professional programme in the Infrastructure Finance, Development and Management along with sector specific specializations to cater to enterprise level needs. The programme aims to develop the students to understand the growth potential in the management of Infrastructure sector covering the life cycle view of projects and management of Infrastructure systems efficiently using appropriate tools and techniques.

The objective of the programme is to develop a professional techno-managerial leader with the potential to manage complex infrastructure projects and organisations in India and globally, with distinct competencies in project evaluation and appraisal, infrastructure project planning, financing, design, control and monitoring construction, project execution, operation and maintenance etc., so as to improve the economic, environmental and social sustainability of the infrastructure systems.

Executive Education

NICMAR has put in place an inservice program executive development program, open to executives working in the construction and related industries, government departments and other interested corporate entities. The program is designed to provide the executives with higher managerial and technical skills.

Main Campus - Pune

The main campus of NICMAR is at Balewadi, in Pune,[22] along the Mumbai-Bangalore Expressway, on a land measuring 11 acres of land, with a total built up area of 377,676 sq ft. The campus hosts the administration and faculty offices, various classrooms, library, computer centre, dining hall, auditorium and a documentation centre. It also provides facilities such as medical clinic, community hall and indoor and outdoor recreational areas.

Regional Centre - Goa

NICMAR operates a regional centre at Goa,[23] at Farmagudi(Ponda), which is a full-fledged facility with a main block housing offices and class rooms, sports arena for indoor and outdoor sports and hostel facilities.

Construction Industry Staff College - Hyderabad

The Construction Industry Staff College at Madhapur in Hyderabad is also a regional centre under NICMAR.[24] It functions out of the 167 acre National Academy of Construction (NAC) campus, with an administration block, an LT block and a PG block with 10 class rooms, 2 computer centres and a library.

Associate Centre - Indore

NICMAR has entered into an agreement with the Altis Institute of Universal Studies on the Agra-Mumbai highway at Indore and manages an associate centre in their campus. The centre is fully equipped to accommodate 2700 students.

Off campus

NICMAR also has two off campuses at Dubai in association with ACORE Consultancy FZE and in Bahrain, a joint venture with Al Moalem Institute. Both the centres conducts company based programs as distance education.

NICMAR also has a study centre in New Delhi, stationed at the Institute of Public Health and Hygiene premises.

Publications

The Institute publishes a periodical, Journal of Construction Management (ISSN 0970-36750) for dissemination of information on modern technologies in construction management.
