National Institute Of Technology Sikkim (NIT Sikkim or NITSKM, Hindi: राष्ट्रीय प्रोद्योगिकी संस्थान सिक्किम) is a premier technical institute situated in the Indian state of Sikkim. It is one of the 31 National Institutes of Technology in India and has been declared as an Institute of National Importance by Government of India. It is an autonomous institute and functioning under the aegis of Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

History

National Institute of Technology, Sikkim is one among the ten newly sanctioned National Institutes of Technology by the Government of India under the 11th Five year Plan, 2009.[3] NIT Sikkim started functioning in August, 2010.

Campus

Currently it is being operated from temporary campus at the Barfung Block, Ravangla Sub Division of South Sikkim. Ravangla campus is surrounded by great scenic beauty. It is likely to continue its activities at Ravangla Campus till its permanent campus comes up at Khamdong, Sikkim. It is managed by the NIT Sikkim Society registered under the Societies Act.

Academics

All courses and examinations are conducted in English language as the only mode of instruction. NIT Sikkim offers a 4-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programme in the following engineering departments:

It also offers a 2-year Master of Technology (M.Tech) programme in Computer Science and Engineering, and PhD Programme in many disciplines. Admission to undergraduate programmes is taken through the National level engineering entrance examination, JEE (Main). Prior to JEE (Main), students were admitted through AIEEE. Admission to (M.Tech) programme is through CCMT.

NIT Sikkim started its academics in 2010 with three engineering departments - Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Electrical and Electronics Engineering at undergraduate level.

Currently it is operating from a temporary campus at Ravangla. Its temporary campus still provides lots of facilities to its students.

PARAM Kanchenjunga supercomputer

National Institute of Technology Sikkim campus has its own supercomputer 'PARAM Kanchenjunga', the fastest Supercomputer among all 31 National Institutes of Technology, the machine was formally unveiled by Sikkim Governor Shrinivas Patil at the NIT Sikkim campus, Ravangla on 15 April 2016. The supercomputer, ‘PARAM Kanchenjunga’ is a collaboration between Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) Pune and the Ministry of Communications and IT. The supercomputer is equipped with the latest Intel-based processor and accelerator technologies with a peak computing power of 15 Teraflops which will give a major boost to research at all levels. The total cost to establish the supercomputer exceeds over ₹ 2 crores.[4]

Library

The institute has a central library which caters to all the academic needs of students. The library also subscribes to a number of scientific journals and magazines.

Internet accessibility

The academic buildings are all Wi-Fi enabled and they are connected through high speed LAN too. All the labs are also connected to the internet through high speed LAN. Almost all hostels are provided with internet facility through Wi-Fi or LAN and other hostels will also be provided in near future.

Auditorium

An Auditorium is inside the campus for important occasions and cultural events.

Hostels

The Institute provides boarding facilities to the students and the faculty members, on the campus. The Institute provides separate hostels for the male and female students with separate mess facilities.

Sports

The Institute has playgrounds with facilities for playing cricket, football, volleyball etc. It also has facilities to play badminton, table tennis etc. The institution also hosts a number of intra-sports tournaments for its students which are handled by the student body of NIT Sikkim.

The students are also encouraged to participate in events like Inter NIT sports meet. Sports are thoroughly promoted with the aim that leaders of tomorrow need to be good sportsperson.

Technical And Cultural Activities

Abhiyantran

Abhiyantran is the Annual Tech Fest of the Institute. Abhiyantran encompasses an entire gamut of events that test the technical skills and thought process of aspiring engineers from all branches with problems which check the technical knowledge as well as the intellect. Events like Robotics, Hardware and Software Designing, Paper Presentations, provide the perfect stage for young minds to display their talents. It witnesses participation from different Engineering Colleges, and different companies extend their support by sponsoring the events and organizing workshops.

Udgam

Udgam is the Annual Cultural Fest organised by the Student body of the Institute. The cadence of life touches right note when it blossoms with all colors. Brushing of all shades of human emotion and artistic flair plays an important role in an all-round development. And this cultural extravaganza provides opportunity to all the students for the realization of this very purpose. The event is a culmination of sound and lights, of music and arts, of dances and drama, of thoughts and words, the perfect place to bring out the artist in everyone and to break the rut of daily life.

Anuvrat

The Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) Department has its unique tech-society, Anuvrat which organizes the most exciting technical events and quizzes round the year.
