Nazirabad Thanda is a tribal village under Pargi jurisdiction in Rangareddy District, in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The name Thanda derives from the fact that only Lambadi(Banjara) community people live there. The population is greater than 1,000 people.
Origins
An accurate history of Lambanis or Lambadis or Banjaras is not available, but the general consensus is that they fought for Prithvi Raj against Muhammad of Ghor.
Lambanis originally were Rajputs who migrated to southern parts of India for trade and agriculture. They settled in the southern or central area and slowly detached themselves from Rajasthan. Over time, the Lambanis adopted the local culture. The Banjara are, together with the Domba, sometimes called the "Gypsies of India".
Culture
The Lambadi customs, language and dress indicate they originated from Rajasthan. They live in settlements called Tandas. Historically, they lived in zupadas (huts), but now many of them live in towns and cities. They have a unique culture and dance form and often find occasion to gather, sing and dance.
Language
The trail of the Lambadi can be traced through their language as they borrow words from Rajasthani, Gujarati and Marathi. The language spoken by the Lambanis who settled in the Yavatmal district of Vidarbha, Maharashtra is a mixture of Hindi, Rajasthani and Marathi.
The word "Banjara" evolved from a mix of Prakrit, Hind and Rajasthani words, "Bana/Ban or Vana/Van" meaning Forest or Moorlands and Chara meaning 'Movers'.
Food
The traditional food of the Lambadis is Bati, which is Roti. They also enjoy daliya, a dish cooked using wheat and jawar. Solai is a non-vegetarian dish made exclusively by Lambadi. Spicy food is prevalent in their diet.
Dress
Women wear colorful costumes, with mirror chips and coins, such as Phetiya (a Ghagra) and Kanchalli (a top) and adorn their hands with tattoos. Women put thick bangles on their arms (Patli). Their accessories are silver rings, coins, chains and hair pleats tied together at the end by Chotla. Men wear Dhoti and Kurta [shorts with many folds]. These garments were designed for protection from the harsh desert climate, as well as to distinguish them from other tribes.
Dance
Lambadi dance, originating from Anupu Village near Nagarjunakonda, is a special form of Andhra Pradesh. In this style, the colorful and jewelled female dancers dance in tune with the male drummers to offer homage to their Lord for a good harvest.
Economy
The traditional commerce are agriculture and trade. Lambanis are also nomadic cattle herders.
