Neoscona is a genus of spider in the family Araneidae (araneids) with a mostly pantropical distribution. One species, N. adianta, has a palearctic distribution, and several species occur in North America.
There is a characteristic longitudinal groove on the carapace which separates all species of Neoscona from species of Araneus.[2]
Taxonomy
Neoscona was first separated from other araneids in the now obsolete genus Epeira by Eugène Simon in 1864, initially only as a group rather than a genus. The name Neoscona was derived from νέω, spin, and σχοῐνος, reed or rush.[3]
