Origin of Nepal as a surname
Before origin of surname Nepal, Nepals used to write their surname as Pandit or Upadhyaya. During the regime of 'Malla' King around 12th century in Khas Empire (present western Nepal) Pandit Jayabidyadhar was an advisor to the royal throne and administrator of Empire. In Khas empire there was tradition of honoring the people who dedicated their life for welfare of nation by providing them ownership rights of certain regions of Empire. Also they used to be called by name of that region. This system was known as 'Birtabarichalan' or 'Birtapratha' Following the tradition on 5th Magh, 1192 Bikram sambat (Nepalese Year) Malla king 'Akshay' Son of King 'Jitaridev' honored 2nd son of Bhagavan Bhaskar Pandit (Royal Priest) 'Jayabidyadhar Pandit' by providing him ownership of 3 different parts of empire named 'Nepa','Khaan', Barala (now lies in Western Nepal) as he dedicated his life for political and economic development empire and settling the trade dispute with Tibet. These 3 different regions were divided among sons of Jayabidyadhar Pandit where ownership of "Nepa" was granted to 1st son Sarwagyadhar Nepal. Nepa (name of region) was added to suffix aalaya (Nepa+aalaya) and then Nepal surname was introduced which was firstly used by 'Sarwagyadhar Nepal' and followed by his generations. Until Vedant, the first of his name.
History And Distribution
The history of Nepal clan is divided into different section such as Purwapurankaal, Utarpurankaal, Purwaprachinkaal etc. whose details are written in a book 'Kausakadi santati' Published by Nepal Bamsaj Parisad , Battisputali, kathmandu on October 1988 (Preserved In Tribhuwan University 's Central Library). In beginning of 13th century, due to lack of suitable governance there arises political instability in Khas Empire which lead empire to splits into 22 different principalities (Baaise Rajya). Formation of these 22 kingdoms reduces opportunities, facilities and safety of people. Due to security concern people started to migrate toward central Nepal and East Nepal. The distribution of Nepals can be study as Dhaibu धैबु Nepal group and Daibu दैबु Nepal group. Dhaibhu and Daibu Nepal are the son of Sarwagyadhar Nepal who used to live in Nepa village. After division of Khas empire in 22 kingdoms, all 8 grandson of Dhaibu Nepal migrate to Bagmati Region and Elderson "Deudatta" of younger Daibu Nepal toward Gandaki Region and Youngerson "Purkhupadya" of Daibu Nepal remain in Nepa village. so Nepals in Bagmati region are of Dhaibhu Group and in Gandaki Region are of Daibu group. Later the Nepals of both group migrate toward East and Capital territory and today's Nepals are distributed all over Nepal as well as Sikkim India and Bhutan.
