About the College

Netaji Subhas Mahavidyalaya is a premier academic institution and occupies a pride of place among the academic institutions of the locality. The College was established in the year 1985. It started its journey to spread higher education on and from 18 November 1985 with Arts Stream only. The college has come of age and now offers honours courses in English, Bengali, History and Political Science besides B.A. & B.Com (General) courses. The college is situated near the Indo-Bangladesh border and also in a backward semi-urban area. Most of the inhabitants of the locality and its adjoining surroundings are farmers and belongs to the scheduled caste community (67% population belong to S.C. community). For the development of higher education in the locality and to inculcate social, cultural, moral and humane values, establishment of a college was deemed as utmost necessity. With this end in view, the institution was founded with the help of collective efforts of the local people and educational enthusiasts to meet the need of the local students, mostly from backward classes for value-based higher education.

This institution is a co-educational institution and is affiliated to the University of North Bengal and gets grant-in-aid from the Government of West Bengal. Since 1992 it is included under section 2(f) and 12(B) category of the University Grants Commission. The college intends to introduce some additional elective subjects and other Honours courses in B.A. in near future. Introduction of some vocational job oriented courses are also under serious consideration. The college has NSS wing and plans to introduce NCC at the earliest opportunity. The college has financial assistance from University Grants Commission, MP’s, Local Area Development Fund, MLA's BEUP Scheme and from various departments of the government of West Bengal regarding construction of college buildings and development of the library.

The college campus which is now 7.588 acres was donated by Haldibari Girls High School in 1985 with a noble idea to spread and disseminate higher education at Haldibari and its surrounding areas. The college is trying sincerely, with its limited infrastructural resources, to provide the students with learner friendly facilities, like, the facility of voicing their grievances through grievance redressal cell, of exploring their employment opportunity through the employment counselling cell and availing of medical facilities from the health care unit of the college. With enthusing assistance from University Grants Commission the college caters to the need of the students from backward classes and other laggards through remedial coaching. The college has been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in March 2006 and has been awarded C++ Certification.
