New Artist Model is an American company that publishes online curriculum on the music industry. Headquartered in Cohasset, Massachusetts[1] and founded by Dave Kusek in 2014,[2] the company caters to independent musicians and other music professionals. Topics cover "licensing, publishing, e-commerce, concerts, promotion and networking," among others.[3] By 2016, enrollment in the school was approaching 1,100 members from 60 countries,[1] and New Artist Model has been featured in publications such as Billboard,[3] CMJ,[2] and the Boston Globe.[1]

History

Dave Kusek founded New Artist Model as an online business course in 2014. Kusek had previously developed the online course Berkleemusic.com for Berklee College of Music,[1][4] and had also worked for years in music software development.[5] Kusek is currently CEO of New Artist Model, which caters to musicians,[3] songwriters, producers, and managers.[3] According to Billboard, Kusek started the course to "to help build a next generation of independent artists."[3]

The eight week online course debuted in early 2014,[2] with topics including "licensing, publishing, e-commerce, concerts, promotion and networking."[3] In April 2014, PledgeMusic, Music X-Ray, Bandzoogle and PressKit became affiliates of New Artist Model.[6] The program has been used by artists such as Eden Kai, who won the Brown Bags to Stardom award in Hawaii in 2015.[7] By 2016, enrollment in the school was approaching 1,100 members from 60 countries.[1]

Model and curriculum

The company does not award degrees, instead offering two education tiers (Essential and Master).[1] There is either a teacher-led version taught by Kusek with materclasses,[8] or a self-paced version.[2] With a one-time fee, the course offers a year's worth of materials, including "webinars, live workshops, and downloadable guides that students may consume at their own pace."[1]
