The New Bologna Central Station (Italian: La Nuova Stazione di Bologna Centrale) is a planned high-speed train station building for the Bologna Central railway station in Bologna, Italy. The complex was designed by the architects Arata Isozaki and Andrea Maffei for a competition that took place during 2007 and 2008. The proposal by the architects was selected by architect Gae Aulenti, as president of the International Competition Jury, and Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, the main entity behind the competition.[1]

Concept

The rail line currently divides the city of Bologna into two parts, with the historical center in the south and industrial districts (so called “Bolognina”) and the fair (designed by Kenzo Tange in 1967) in the north.[2] The urban layout is more rectangular in the north, while it is more concentrated and radio centric in the south. The new station is designed to meld together modern and historical architecture. The project hovers over the railway lines that connect the city to the rest of Italy.[3]

The station uses light in its design, with the internal courtyards of the bridged station creating poles of light. Inside the station it is possible to see the levels below, and different shapes of windows were designed for the courtyards.[2]

Building

The architects envisioned the high-speed train station as a permeable structure, which would have to serve as a mediator between the different spirits of the city, a new social hub and not only another piece of infrastructure.[4]

The program was expanded accordingly to include commercial and retail spaces, a sports facility, restaurants, congress halls, theaters, etc. For the final proposal, the architects Arata Isozaki and Andrea Maffei both decided to model the building after a bridge, allowing the tracks to pass below the hovering mass of the building's body. Lifting the structure also allowed for division[5] between the old existing remnants of the previous station and the Piazza XX Settembre, which contains the ancient Porta Galliera and the Roman ruins found buried in the area.[6] The building will have two faces: the older entry to the station faces the historical center, whilst the newer side overlooks the more recent urban areas.
