The New York Skyliners were a soccer team based out of New York, New York that played in the United Soccer Association. The league was made up of teams imported from foreign leagues and the Skyliners were actually the roster of C.A. Cerro from Montevideo, Uruguay.[1]
History
Following the 1967 season, the USA merged with the National Professional Soccer League to form the North American Soccer League with the teams from the former USA having to create their rosters from scratch. The merged league decided not to have two-team cities and, as such, the NPSL's New York Generals initially planned to merge with the New York Skyliners to create one merged team. But, in January 1968, both Madison Square Garden and the management of the former NPSL New York Generals, of which RKO-General owned 55%, decided to not continue with the merged franchise. Later that month, Peter Elser, who held a 45% interest in the New York Generals was awarded the NASL's New York franchise. Elser's franchise retained the New York Generals' name and front office and the New York Skyliners effectively went out of existence.
In 2014 the New York Skyliners were brought back as an academy in Queens, New York
