Nickel mine

Nickel mine is a mine that produces nickel. Some mines produce nickel primarily, but some mines produce nickel as a side-product of some other metal that has a higher concentration in the ore. Nickel mine operators include Vale, Norilsk Nickel and Sherritt.

Mines

The first source of nickel were nickel laterites, but developed production technology favored nickel sulphide ores. Most of the world nickel reserves are in form of laterite nickel ores, but most nickel has been historically produced from nickel sulphide ores, but this is changing. Most nickel sulphides have been depleted and new mines are nickel laterite mines. Nickel mines coming online and going through ramp-up in the coming years include: Ravensthorpe (Australia), Ambatovy (Madagascar), Goro (New Caledonia), Voisey Bay (Canada), Barro Alto (Brazil), Koniambo (New Caledonia) and Sotkamo (Finland).
