Nigel Cumberland is an author,[1] leadership coach, speaker[2][3][4][5] and a founder of the Silk Road Partnership.[6][7] He is the author of seven books, a number of which have been translated into a number of foreign languages, including Chinese and Brazilian Portuguese.[8][9] An eighth book is being published in August 2016. He writes self-development and leadership skills books, some of which have been serialized.[10]

He is a member of the European Mentoring and Coaching Council,[11] and oversaw the creation of an industry-wide Global Code of Ethics for coaches and mentors.[12] In January 2016, he was invited to be a founding member of a not-for-profit Gulf Coaching Alliance,[13] which supports knowledge sharing about the coaching profession in the Middle East. He is also a Founding Fellow of the Harvard Medical School-affiliated Institute of Coaching.[14]

Cumberland regularly writes in newspapers about career and leadership related topics.[15] He is also often interviewed for articles on similar topics.[16][17][18][19]

Education

Cumberland read Economics at Queens’ College,[20] University of Cambridge graduating in 1989. He later studied management accounting and since 2005 holds the Fellow ("FCMA") title with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants ("CIMA").[21][22][23] He is trained and certified as a Marshall Goldsmith Stakeholder Centered Coach.[24]

Career

In 2000, Cumberland founded St. George’s Consulting, a recruitment and coaching company with offices in Hong Kong and China. It merged with the Asian arm of Harvey Nash plc in 2003 and renamed St. George’s Harvey Nash.[25] firm was sold to UK recruitment company, Hays plc, in May 2006.[26][27][28]

In 2006, Cumberland renamed the part of St. George’s that he retained The Silk Road Partnership and merged with the business in London of Philip Beddows. Cumberland provides leadership coaching and mentoring through The Silk Road Partnership from his base in Dubai, UAE.[29][30]

Volunteer and causes

Cumberland founded a Hong Kong-based charity called the Getting Back to Work Foundation in 2002 which helped job-seekers to find work.[31][32][33] His mother is from Myanmar and around 2006 he played a role in using social media to speak up against the military government in the country and over the house arrest of Aung San Suu Kyi.[34]
