Night When I Am Sane is a live album by Mickey Newbury. It was released on Winter Harvest Records in 1994.

Background

Night When I Am Sane was Newbury's first live album since 1973's Live at Montezuma Hall. It was recorded at the Hermitage Ballroom in Nashville on March 12, 1994 in front of about 50 invited guests.[1] Newbury accompanies himself on an acoustic guitar and is joined by guitarist Jack Williams. According to Joe Ziemer's book Crystal & Stone, it was one of Newbury's least favorite recordings[2] Newbury also hated the way he looked; prior to the recording, Newbury had appeared in Skins (aka The Gang Boys), in which he played an elderly preacher, and after filming had been unable to get the white dye out of his hair, which led to him cutting it short and dying it brown.[3]

With only two guitars, Newbury utilizes his immense vocal power to compensate for the lack of instrumentation to bring an almost gothic quality to "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)", "33rd of August,", and "Four Ladies" with his mournful, agonized wailing during the song's instrumental breaks. AllMusic's Thom Jurek writes that the songs "come across with so much feeling, pathos, and depth that it's possible to see clear into the darkness in the soul of the man when he wrote it." The album contains several songs not found on other Newbury recordings up to that point, including the title track and the dark "What Will I Do Now," a song of about a man left to bear his grief in the darkness now that his lover is gone.
