Nikolija Jovanović (Serbian Cyrillic: Николија Јовановић, born on 19 October 1989), usually known just as Nikolija, is a Serbian Pop-rap recording artist, dancer and photo model.

Her desire to become a singer emerged mainly because of her mother Vesna Zmijanac, who is a popular singer in the Balkan region. She started her music career in 2011 in Greece as a club dancer and the master of ceremonies. Nikolija also recorded her first song Crazy 2 night, but she didn't achieve success. After that, she moved to Serbia to restart her career in 2013 with R&B and rap songs which had attention-grabbing and controversial lyrics. Actually, she brought that kind of music to west Balkans.[1] She became one of the most popular singers from the younger generation. Most of her songs were hits, but the greatest ones are Kako posle mene, Alkohola litar and Opasna igra. Her music video for Opasna igra was the second most watched video in Serbia for 2015.[2] She is currently working on her debut album. Nikolija took part in the reality television show, Survivor Srbija VIP: Philippines in 2010 and Ples sa Zvezdama (Season 1) in 2014.[3]

Life and career

Early life

She was born in Zagreb, Croatia, but she was raised in Belgrade. Her mother is the famous folk singer Vesna Zmijanac, and her father is Vlada Jovanovic, former marketing chief at PGP RTS. Being only 6 years old, she starred in her mother's music video for the song Kad bih znala kako si. In primary school she evinced an inclination for singing, winning the municipal and town singing competitions. She always wanted to be a singer, but her father wanted her to finish college.[4] And so it was. Because of the study she moved to Athens. In Greece, she got a degree in International Business at the American Deree College.

2010 – 2015: Career beginnings and early success

She started her career as a dancer and singer in Greek nightclubs during her studies. In 2011, she released her first song Crazy 2 night with DJ Kas as Nicole, but the song did not achieve success on the Greek market.

After the completion of her studies in 2013, she moved to Serbia and continued her career there. Milan Stanković brought her to Atelje Trag to record new songs. She wanted to bring something new to Serbian music. Nikolija recorded her second song Ćao zdravo with Teča Gambino. At first, the public didn't accept well Nikolija's music style, provocative lyrics and music videos. The song still had a large number of reviews. Same year she released the second single Nikolija, which was better accepted. Nikolija was part of City Records the compilations, City woman and, The best of 2013/4, Ćao zdravo was part of, Letnji hitovi 2013. In the same year she had a duet called Milion dolara (Million dollars) with Ana Nikolić. Music video for this song is known as one of the most expensive in Serbian show business and it won OGAE music video award.[6][7] After these three songs, Nikolija has become a very popular singer in the region, but the next songs will make her even more popular. In 2014, she released Alkohola litar (Liter of alcohol) with Elitni odredi and DJ Mladja[8] and in October the same year Kako posle mene (How after me). The song is in the turbo-folk style and has the rhythm of Bulgarian Čoček.[9] She wore a dress made by George Styler on the runway during the Belgrade fashion week.[10] In the late 2014 she released a duet song with the Montenegrian singer Dado Polumenta, Premija (premium).[11]

2015 - present: upcoming debut album

In the month of May 2015 she started shooting her new music video for the song Opasna igra (A dangerous game) in Greece,[12] but she was also working on her first album. Nikolija released the single on 4 May for IDJ Videos.[13] During the same month she held a charity concert in Belgrade where she sang Opasna igra live for the first time.[14] She published her first ballad Ljubavni maneken (Love mannequin) on October 20 through Toxic entertainment. The single came with a music video which has an art-fashion moment, as she says.[15] In November she was the trademark face for the Balmain x H&M collaboration in Serbia.[16] In 2016 Nikolija is planning to release an album with three new songs: 101 propušten poziv (101 missed phone call), Pucaj zbog nas (Shoot for us) and Samo me voli (just love me). She already took photos for the cover image, finished two songs and two music videos, but she is still working on the third song. There is also a chance that she would release a single before the album.

Personal life

Nikolija used to live in Bukulja with her mother, but now she lives in Belgrade. Serbian language is her mother tongue. She also speaks Greek, English, and French. Her parents are divorced. She also has a half-sister (Teodora Jovanović) and a half-brother (Luka Jovanović).[17]

The media blamed her for the break up of Milan Stanković and Rada Manojlović,[18] but also talked about her relationship with Nikola Rađen who is married to singer Ana Kokić.[19] She denied all these things. She was in a relationship with NBA player Thanasis Antetokounmpo.[20] Nikolija has been in a relationship with the singer Relja Popović, former member of Elitni Odredi band, since 2014.[21] During the filming of the music video for the song entitled Alkohola litar, they fell in love with each other and started dating, but they kept it secret from the public. After they had been on a vacation in the Dominican Republic, they realized that Nikolija got pregnant.[22] Later on, the media uncovered their relationship. Unfortunately, she lost the baby in the third month of pregnancy.[23]

Artistry

Nikolija is well known for scandals. Her provocative behaviour, her music videos and lyrics made that image. However, she is also shown as an honest and well-educated person. She is very often seen in nightclubs as a guest. After his concert in Kombank Arena, Belgrade, Nikolija was spotted at a private party with 50 Cent. She was the only Serbian celebrity at that party. In 2014, she was seen in a nightclub with an actress and painter Eva Ras, who was 73 at that time. Eva said , The two of us know why we like each other’’.[24] Same year she was hired as a model in the video for the Greek song called Miss C.O.K.E by The Hype. The video itself is very controversial and it show's Nikolija and several other models using drogs and kissing each other. Nikolija after that said that she isn't sinned and that everything in the video was just an act.[25] After her concert in Vienna, in 2015, she spent all her money on nightlife and her battery in the phone was empty. Consequently, she had to ask the policemen for a ride to her hotel.[26]

She was mentioned several times in songs by Serbian rappers (Gru, Fox, Rasta, etc.) saying that she can't sing and that is necessary for her to use Auto-Tune while recording. They also criticized her look and music style.[27]

Nikolija participated in Survivor Srbija VIP: Philippines with her mother Vesna. And that was the first time public met her. Nikolija was in Bahandi tribe. She was the first one who was eliminated. She also took a part in Ples sa Zvezdama (Season 1), it was announced on March 13, 2014.[28] Her dance partner was Ignjat Filipović. Two of them received good comments from the judges. But they had a small number of audience votes, because of Nikolija's provocative career beginning. They were eliminated on May 12, 2014.

Performances

Her music comprises hip hop music and Balkan folk music, but it also has elements of pop-rap, electronic music, pop music, R&B, gangsta rap. Crazy tonight and Ćao zdravo were in R&B and house genre. Her first singles (Milion dolara and Nikolija) were pure hip-hop songs. Alkohola litar has electronic like sound. And later songs (Kako posle mene; Premija; Opasna igra) were a mixture of folk sound and pop-rap singing. The theme of her songs is mostly seduction and one nihgt romances. Ljubavni maneken from 2015 is a modern ballad song.
