Nimbalkar

The Nimbalkar is a Maratha clan, which derives its surname from the forest of Nimbalak in Phaltan taluka, Satara district, Maharashtra, India.[1]

Some Nimbalkars served as head of the deshmukhs (sardeshmukhs or sardars) during the period of the Mughal empire.[2]

Affiliations

The main ancestral city of the Nimbalkar is Phaltan, though they are also found in other regions Marathas inhabit.[3] The clan is linked to other clans prominent in Maratha history: Emperor Shivaji's first wife Saibai was from the Nimbalkar dynasty. Deepaabai, the wife of Maloji Bhosale (Shivaji's grandfather) was also from a Nimbalkar family.[4]
