Nirmal Jain is the founder and Chairman of IIFL Holdings Limited. He is a PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management) from IIM (Indian Institute of Management) Ahmedabad, a Chartered Accountant and a rank-holder Cost Accountant. His professional track record is equally outstanding. He started his career in 1989 with Hindustan Lever Limited, the Indian arm of Unilever. During his stint with Hindustan Lever, he handled a variety of responsibilities, including export and trading in agro-commodities. He contributed immensely towards the rapid and profitable growth of Hindustan Lever's commodity export business, which was then the nation's as well as the Company's top priority.
He founded Probity Research and Services Pvt. Ltd. (later re-christened India Infoline) in 1995; The first independent equity research Company in India. His work set new standards for equity research in India. Mr. Jain was one of the first entrepreneurs in India to seize the internet opportunity, with the launch of www.indiainfoline.com in 1999. Under his leadership, IIFL Holdings not only steered through the dotcom bust and one of the worst stock market downtrends but also grew from strength to strength.
Academics
Nirmal Jain is an alumnus of Narsee Monjee College of Commerce & Economics and IIM Ahmedabad.[2] He is also a Chartered Accountant and a Cost Accountant. He has consistently excelled in academics, was always amongst the top scorers and stood All India Second in Chartered Accountancy (year required). He acquired all three top professional qualifications in Finance even before he was 23 years of age.
Career
Nirmal Jain started his career in 1989 with Hindustan Lever Limited[3] soon after his MBA from IIM Ahmedabad. During his stint with Hindustan Lever, he handled a variety of responsibilities which included exports and trading in agro-commodities. He contributed immensely towards rapid and profitable growth of Hindustan Lever's commodity export business which was then the nation's as well as the company's top priority.[4] In 1995, Nirmal Jain set up what is today known as IIFL.
Entrepreneurial Ventures
In 1994, Nirmal Jain joined hands with two local brokers, Motilal Oswal and Ramdev Agarwal, to set up their equity research unit, Inquire – Indian Equity Research.[5] However, this project couldn't sustain and had to be shut.
On October 18, 1995, Nirmal set up Probity Research and Services Private Limited. Nirmal had planned to build the business on the premise that most brokers would set up their own research and cover top 200 stocks. The name was in between changed to India Infoline.com & later to what is today known as India Infoline or IIFL.
Awards and Recognition
- Nirmal jain was nominated in the year 2000 and 2007 for the 'Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year' Award and in both the years he has a finalist.
- Nirmal Jain has received the 'Udyog Rattan Award 2007' from the institute of Economic Studies.
