Nongshim (Nongshim Co., Ltd.) is South Korea's largest processed food manufacturer,[2] specializing in instant noodles and snacks. The company was established under the name Lotte Industrial Company on September 18, 1965, in South Korea and changed its name in March 1978. Its products are sold around the world.

History

Nongshim was founded as Lotte Industrial Company in September 1965, in South Korea. It changed its name to Nongshim in March 1978. Its products are sold around the world.

Shin Ramyun

Nongshim makes Shin Ramyun (신라면, an instant noodle manufactured since October 1986), Beef Bowl Noodle Soup, Chapagetti noodle (a cross between spaghetti and jajangmyeon, featuring spaghetti-like noodles in a dark soy-based sauce), and a wide variety of snacks including shrimp crackers called Saewookkang (새우깡), which are similar to Kappa Ebisen, which is produced by Calbee.[3]

Nongshim Group

Nongshim has ten subsidiary companies, which are grouped together under the holding company, Nongshim Group.[4] The companies include Mega Mart, which deals with distribution and discount stores, Taekyung Nongsan, Korea's largest dry-food manufacturer, and Youlchon Chemistry, which deals with packaging.[4]

Jjawang

On April 20, 2015, Nongshim launched its premium instant jjajangmyeon (짜장면: noodles in black bean sauce) product "Jjawang" (짜왕), which has become a power brand in the instant noodle market. The name is an amalgamation of the word "jiajing," the black bean sauce, and "wang," which means "king" in Korean. The product is currently the second best selling in the Korean domestic instant noodle market. "Jjawang" has received much acclaim thanks to its thick noodles and rich jjajang sauce.[5] [6]

SaewooKang

"SaewooKang," shrimp flavored snack, ranked number one seller among children for four consecutive years. The snack is the product of Nongshim. Five other Nongshim snack products ranked in the top ten. It is apparent that Nongshim is popular and leading snack producing company in Korea.[8]

Matchampong

The reporter of the article, a famous Chinese chef, and food journalists tasted four newly released instant noodles from four different companies. After careful tasting and reviewing, each presented his and her authentic preference on three different categories. Nongshim's "Matchamgpong" received the best ranking in the texture of noodle.[9]

Due to "Korea Wave," many Asian began to appreciate Korean food culture and trends. One of the scene from a Korean Drama aired the famous main actress eating Nongshim's instant noodle. The sales of the product high-rocketed in the Chinese market.[10]
