Norfolk Island Act 1979
The Norfolk Island Act 1979 was an Act of the Parliament of Australia. It granted the Australian external territory of Norfolk Island limited self-government. [1] The Act formally established the Norfolk Island Legislative Assembly and gave the Assembly powers to pass, amend, and repeal laws, and – subject to the assent of the Administrator of Norfolk Island – executive powers.[1] The Act was made under the powers granted to Parliament in section 122 of the Constitution of Australia.[1]
The Norfolk Island Legislation Amendment Bill 2015 passed the Australian Parliament on May 14, 2015 (Assented on May 26, 2015) abolishing self-government on Norfolk Island and transferring Norfolk Island into a council as part of New South Wales law.[2] From July 1, 2016 Norfolk Island legislation will be transferred to New South Wales and subject to NSW legislation.[3]
