Norman Gowar

Professor Norman William Gowar (born 7 December 1940) was Professor of mathematics at the Open University and Principal of Royal Holloway, University of London from 1990-2000.^[1]

Education

He was educated at Sir George Monoux Grammar School in east London and the City University in central London.^[1]

Career

After a period working with English Electric in 1963 he was appointed lecturer in mathematics at City University, London. In 1969 he became a founder member of the Open University, and later became Deputy Vice-Chancellor. The first course broadcast by the university in 1971 was an introduction to the maths foundation course presented by Gowar.^[2] In 1990 he became principal of Royal Holloway and Bedford New College. He was a member of the Fulbright Commission from 2001-2005.

Personal life

He married first in 1963 Diane May Parker with whom he had one son and one daughter, and second in 1981, Professor Judith Margaret Greene, a daughter of Patrick Gordon-Walker.
