The AHL's North Division was formed in 1996 as part of the northern conference in a league realignment. It lasted one season and it became the New England Division. In 2001 the New England Division remained the North Division in the new Eastern Conference. The division moved to the western conference in 2003 when the East Division and the Atlantic Division formed in the east. In the 2015-16 AHL season the division moved back to the eastern conference.
