Royal Stoke University Hospital (formerly the University Hospital of North Staffordshire) is a teaching and research hospital at Hartshill in the English county of Staffordshire. It lies in the city of Stoke-on-Trent, near the border with Newcastle-under-Lyme, and is one of the largest hospitals in the country and a major local employer, with over 6,000 staff. It is run by the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust.

History

The University Hospital of North Staffordshire NHS Trust was formed by merging North Staffordshire Royal Infirmary (former voluntary hospital), City General Hospital (former workhouse infirmary) and Hartshill Orthopaedic Hospital (former orthopaedic hospital). It was dissolved in October 2014 when the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust was established.

Excavations on the main site have revealed that a large medieval hospital operated on exactly the same site from the thirteenth century until the 1580s.

Development

In 2003 the hospital was chosen for a £350-million Private Finance Initiative development, and work on major new facilities is now underway. Most of the wards and Accident & Emergency department will be moved from the Royal Infirmary site across to the new site over the course of 2012, after which the former site will be redeveloped for much needed housing in this area.

From April 2012 all A&E departments were on the new site, together with new Maternity and Oncology units.

Keele University School of Medicine and School of Nursing and Midwifery

It is the main teaching hospital for Keele University's School of Medicine and the School of Nursing and Midwifery. The clinical undergraduate medical school and postgraduate medical school buildings are in the grounds of the hospital, as well as the Clinical Education Centre and the Keele University Health Library which is the main teaching facility for the School of Nursing and Midwifery.
