Nusrat Munir Ul-Ghani[1] (born 1 September 1972) is a British Conservative Party politician who is the Member of Parliament (MP) for Wealden.[2]
Early life
She was born in Birmingham on 1 September 1972. Ghani was educated in state schools before going onto Birmingham City University and gaining a master's degree from the University of Leeds. Before involvement in politics, she was employed campaigning for charities Age UK and Breakthrough Breast Cancer, before working for the BBC World Service.[3]
Ghani is the daughter of immigrants from Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir.
Parliamentary career
Ghani first stood for Parliament at the 2010 General Election, when she was the candidate for Birmingham Ladywood.[3]
Ghani was elected in the 2015 General Election, following the retirement of Charles Hendry,[4] as one of thirteen Muslims to become members of Parliament.[5]
Her selection was in an open primary where anyone listed on the constituency’s electoral register was eligible to attend and vote for their preferred candidate.[6] The primary attracted nearly 400 residents from across the constituency.[7][8][9]
